At a point where there is a thatched roof house is a field completely covered with Yuzengiku. The entire field is covered in the gentle color of light purple. You can purchase these flowers and pick them on your own ( 200 yen for 10 stems ). You can pay into a box placed next to cutting tools and wrap them with a plastic sheet to take home. Kuta is located in the northern end of Sakyo-ku. This area is widely known as a place where traditional Hanagasa dance and Matsuage are performed. The area is also known for a large amount of Tochi ( Kukara Horse Chestnuts ) are collected. Their local special products Tochi Mochi is very popular. The symbol of the area is Kitayama Yuzengiku ( a type of chrysanthemum ) bloom in summer time between mid July and early August. A post from Jay Klaphake sparked my interest. It showed a picture of a field of Yuzen Chrysanthemum in the small village of Kuta. I've been in that area before, and I know it's pristine and beautiful. I drove on NR 110 that runs past the Hisata River. Soon it will be the Obon holidays, and a nearby campsite was inundated with tents and campers enjoying the River. A little further is the village of Kuta and my destination.
