The historic theater is open daily from 9am to 5pm for viewing. It was just 200 yen per person to enter, and the attendant was so friendly and helpful. He explained to us the history of the building, showed us trapdoor tunnel to the stage, and played some traditional music to recreate the feel of when the theater performed Kabuki plays. We didn't have many expectations when we stopped by, but were so glad that we did! Definitely worth the small entry fee to see this piece of history. Wish we could come back when there is a concert or event scheduled to see it on action.

オデオン座の館内を見学しました。中は想像以上に広く、そしてきれいに修復されており、無人の時間でしたが目の前で演劇が行われているような気分になりました。館長の語るエピソードは造詣が深く、興味深いことばかりで、皆様も是非色々伺ってみることをおすすめします。桟敷席や袖、奈落、そして様々な展示物を見ていたらあっという間に1時間近くもたってしまいました。 舞台となった映画「虹をつかむ男」は未見でしたが、宿で早速サブスクの映像を視聴、オデオン座や周辺の景色が30年は経っているのに現存している部分が多いことに感心しました。勿論映画自体も素晴らしかったです。ありがとうございました。 ※夜景の写真は加工しています

オデオン座は当初、「脇町劇場」という名の 芝居小屋として建てられ、歌舞伎や演劇などの公演が行われました。戦後には「脇劇」の愛称で親しまれ、 コンサートや映画の上映も行われていたのです。

当時のにぎわいを知る方に お話を伺ったところ、オデオン座で見た映画やお芝居は、子どものころの良い思い出となっていると語っていました。

そんな脇町劇場ですが、映画産業の衰退とともに利用者が激減。...
