They charge 400yen per person at 2 separate payment booths. They only told us our footwear (walking shoes) weren’t appropriate at the second window after we’d already paid to enter.
They had some slippers and socks to go with them for a total of 1300yen if you wanted to continue but after stomaching the idea of 1600yen for just the entrance fee (2 people) we declined and left.
My wife was almost declined at the first window because she was wearing hiking shorts that looks like a skirt and skirts aren’t allowed (she tucked in the extra fabric and was allowed in). I don’t know what else isn’t allowed but likely anything related to women aren’t welcome.
We wasted our money. I’d give this one a miss if I could do it again. It should also be noted that this is not unique either. There are other mountain-side temples. I went to one on Shodo island that was free and you could go inside.
Simple ways to improve would be if they tell you if your shoes are going to be a problem at the first payment booth before you pay. Secondly it’s time for them to advance into...
Read moreThe view from the top is hard won and 100% worth the effort. I took many pictures, both of the route up and the view at the top, but they don't even start to do either justice.
The path to the top is extremely rugged and dangerous. Frequently the path will be right on the edge of the cliff and you will have little more than rocky foot holds and loose roots to hold onto. If you slip, you will likely die. That is not an exaggeration... Come with good fitting shoes and free hands. You will NOT be able to climb up carrying anything in your hands. If it rains at all, think twice about making coming.
I'm not trying to scare anyone away, the view at the top is totally worth the effort, but the risk can't be overstated. If the weather is nice and dry and you take your time, you will be OK.
Reaching the top and sitting under Sanbutsu-ji is an absolute highlight of my trip (third to Japan, easily the best of anything I've seen or done yet).
Bring plenty to drink, cloths you don't mind getting dirty and a sense of adventure, and you...
Read moreIts pretty hard to get there. You have to take a loong bus ride to the entrance from the ttainstation. After that you have to pay the entrance fee and you are not allowed to go alone. It was bad for me because i travelled alone. So i had to wait for other tourist. After that i climbed the mountain alone. Its a hard way for older people. But im 19 and had no problems. Its an adventure! The view is wonderful. You can see the other mountains and the beautiful nature. The temple itself is not that special. You cant go in or anything but the way to the temple is great. I would do it...
