Gankoji — Attraction in Mitake

I first visited this temple about 15 years ago when walking the Nakasendo Highway. Unfortunately, the buildings and grounds are in no better shape than when I was there then, and are in need of some loving care and attention. The good news is that when we visited this time, just passing through Mitake, there were some notices that I believe indicated some serious renovation plans, and there were a couple of people around who looked like surveyors or cultural historians.

It will be great if this temple is indeed renovated, as the main building appears to be beautifully constructed of wood, and there are many inscribed stones in the grounds (as well as a splendid Guan Yin) that I assume have some relevance to the temple's location on the old Nakasendo.

I look forward to visiting again in...

2017/04/07 記　　境内に興味を引く樹木があります。 御嵩町指定名木の｢シラカシ｣｢シダレザクラ｣ではなく 桜と松が一体となった樹･･･なんです。 もともとは、老桜の木に、松が発芽･発根。 松は桜の養分などを摂って成長....。 今は桜の幹を貫いて根を大地に下ろしている様です。 桜も元気な二代目が(も)育っている様です。 その根っこを見て、元気を貰いました。 また、老樹の桜花を見に、訪れようと思っています。

自然が良いのかも知れませんが、松...良い樹形なんです から、手入れをすればもっと見栄えがするのでは･･･｡ ついでに横にあるもみじ、邪魔し過ぎてると思います。

2020年４月５日(日)に、秘仏御本尊の、薬師如来座像の御開帳があります。12年に一度の御開帳なので、なかなか拝観する機会はありませんが、前回、前々回の御開帳には、縁あって、結縁することができました。

現在、本堂は修理中ですが、普段から、本堂にいらっしゃらず、宝物館(収蔵庫？)の中の、お厨子の中にいらっしゃいます。寺伝によると、桜の木で彫られたそうで、全体に赤みを帯びています。毎、 子年の４月に御開帳があるので、覚えておいて、損は無いでしょう。

御本尊も、素晴らしい像ですが、同じく、宝物館(収蔵庫？)に収められている、仏像は、非常に優れていて、ほとんどが、重要文化財に指定されています。御本尊と結縁できなくても、満足できるかも知れないです。
