It's very true, Gorilla chop is a very shallow dive site. The max depth under the pier only reaches about 15 meters, and the average depth ranges between 6 and 8 meters for the rest of the site. That's part of what's great about it, though!
Staying so shallow can significantly extend your dive time. Allowing you to experience the incredible diversity of wildlife there. Everything from painted crabs, mantis shrimp, a multitude of sea slugs including the adorable leaf sheep to box fish, porcupine fish, razor fish, trumpet fish, parrot fish, pipe fish, even rays, sea turtles, schools of squid, cuddle fish, and schools of barracuda sometimes. That's not even close to everything.
It's especially beautiful when the sun is out. The way the light defracts through the water to play across the perfect sandy bottom can be absolutely mesmerizing. Especially when the conditions aren't good enough for diving else where in Okinawa, Gorilla Chop is the go-to spot...

Little beach is perfect for the little kids and they can play in the shallows.
I guess there is a rock people jump off during high tide ( a buddy seen a few people I didn’t)
Large reefs !!! Can’t say how far out ( but easily identifiable but the changes in color to the water ! By the stairs and jacks there are many more large reefs and fish.
Near the shore are some fish but mostly what looked like dead coral reef.

Side note capt kangaroo burger is a good spot to hit after. Just watch out for how busy they can get and possibly close early from selling out …. Yes they are...
Read moreThe area has free parking and a building with bathrooms and showers. There's a fee of 100 yen to use the shower for 5mins. Before entering the building, there are tubs of water outside the entrance to rinse your sandy footwear (please comply with the rules that they have posted).
The beach isn't that long or big but the water is awesome! You'll start seeing corals and different types of fishes as far as 5m away from the beach. There are little urchins amongst the corals and rocks so be careful where you step and also not to break any corals as much as possible.
