A nice place yo visit if you have the time to do so. Beautiful scenery with the +200 years old trees and its snowy road.
Getting there requires booking a bus which can be done right at the Nagano Station. They go out around every hour in the morning. Last one to get back to Nagano from the shrine is around at 4 pm.
Take layers to visit as it can be slightly rainy and cold, it wasn’t my case tho. I wore thermal clothing and jackets and that made it a pleasant time.
The road right now is starting to melt but since it’s still cold you will find ice formation which, with the wrong shoes, can be tricky.
I’d recommend not spending more than 2 hours here, so you can do more with your day.
Sadly due to it being winter, the access to the last stretch of the shrine is closed. It’s still worth the small treck. Pretty easy to do if you have the right shoes.
Before starting, go to the bathroom and download the app. There’s free WiFi. “On the trip” will tell you about the history of this place and point out each of the main things thoroughly the walk. You can predownload it so you don’t have...
Read moreGreat place to visit. It's quite a bit of walk to the main temple which is not the main attraction in my opinion. The best part if when you walk through the main gate then to be greeted with big tall cedar trees. If you want to take great pictures, make sure you go early otherwise it's gonna be waiting game for quite sometime to not have anyone in your pictures. The sun will angle through the trees lines on the right (May-June). If you plan to come here by car, there'll be 2 parking options available to you; one with cash only which is right in front of the entry to the temple from the main road, another with boom gate located litle bit further...
Read moreAmazingly beautiful place, especially in winter. You will need to take a bus to the middle shrine (Togakushi Chusha) in winter and walk up to the upper shrine but the walk is serene and healing. It would take about 30-45 mins for the walk one-way.
Do plan to go earlier as the last bus leaves at 5.15pm and there were quite a few of us left in the queue after the last bus had left. Luckily, the bus conductor did a count and called for 2 more buses which eventually came to fetch everyone back to Nagano station. You do have to pay for this bus ride...
