日本最古と言われる即身仏=弘智大師さまを祀る真言宗智山派の越後寺泊の古刹•霊場。

大きな駐車場もありますが、冬季は基本的に休館のようで、「即身仏御開帳(有料)」は、拝観できない日や時間帯があるため事前にHPや電話で問い合わした方が良いです。

お寺の手前の道には弥彦登山者の駐車スペースがありますがそちらを行き過ぎた先が西生寺ですのでご注意下さい。 即身仏を見学できずとも雪がなければ境内は歩けますので、弘智大師の大像や水子供養の地蔵群も見れて、圧巻ですね。

駐車場先からは日本海を望む大展望台(といっても石テーブルがあるだけですが)は佐渡島も一望のパノラマが絶景です。
