UPDATE ONE YEAR LATER: They have adjusted the parking price from 500 yen to 1000 yen. Double the price but nothing has changed. So if you want to see 3 villages, it will cost you 3000 yen in parking. Greedy!
Without a doubt the best gassho village in the area! To the moron that wrote that there is nothing authentic or informative about it, you are so dead wrong it blows my mind.
First of all, parking is right next to the main road and costs 500 yen. There are restrooms and even an elevator to take you down to village level. I personally recommend the walk down, as you get a nice view of the houses.
Secondly, there are two buildings where you can pay an entry fee (or pay a combo fee of 300 for both) to learn about the history of the village and view authentic items they used. The staff will hand you a book with translations in your preferred language so you don't miss out on any information.
Thirdly, there's a shop where you can take a break to eat and drink something, grab a snack and buy some souvenirs.
Overall, it's not a big place but you can still easily spend an hour or more here. The lack of multiple large tourist buses stopping here is a big plus to me. You actually get to enjoy the peace and quiet. Everyone we interacted with was super friendly in the village (especially the parking attendant; bless...
Read moreI spent more time here than i actually did in Shirakawago (why bother). Same thing, lesser crowd. Isn't it great, having the whole place to yourself, with absolutely no one in your photos/in your face. No rushing/no tourists only you and the sound of nature (birds chirping, water flowing, sounds of the wind). It was just surreal actually being able to witness this, as if time actually stopped, i just wish i can sit here and look at the mountains forever. Snow is everywhere...and fresher snow if you're here first thing in the morning. Icicles hangin on edges of the roof. To get there, take the elevator down, and you will reach a dark tunnel (zombie apocalypse kinda feel) then turn right to get to the village. There's also more things to see if...
Read moreBeautiful little village which is located an hour approximately from Kanazawa and around 30 minutes from Shirakawa-go. This village is much more quieter with lesser tourists and a smaller area for you to visit. It is one of three traditional villages in the region and definitely worth a visit. Some souvenir and snack shops are available. Park at the village and use the elevator to head up to the viewing area. From there you can walk back down to the carpark at the village and take some lovely photos on the way back. Parking at the village is JPY500 and you pay the carpark warden directly....
