On August 15th each year, the Suwa Fireworks Festival displays one of the most spectacular fireworks displays in Japan, with over 40,000 fireworks lighting up the night sky. It's considered one of the most extravagant displays in Japan.
Every seven years, the Onbashira (sacred wooden pillars - Onbashira - comprises sixteen large fir trees, but only those with a lifespan over 150 years and a height of 17 meters are chosen) Festival takes place and involves the transportation of massive logs from nearby mountain ranges to be used as pillars at Suwa Taisha Shrine.
