This place really deserves 5 stars except for the difficulty getting here for those taking public transport. Rather challenging for the non Japanese because google points you to Ongaku Hall (I think it’s a funeral parlor). When you follow google directions and get off at this Ongaku Hall, it’s NOT a 2 minute walk but a 30 minute walk in a rather rural neighborhood with not many commercial establishments. So this google needs correcting.
Getting a ride was very challenging. Uber and Didi both didn’t have cars available but I was lucky enough to flag a passing taxi who charged above the normal rate due to the heavy traffic going to the tulip field. So normal would be in the 1500 yen range. Same difficulty getting a ride from the tulip field.
However, there are buses and when you come here, go to the gift shop first and find out the bus schedules. The last one today Saturday 13 April 2024 was at 18:22 for the Kesei Usui station. They also have a number for taxis and can help you to call but alas - today wasn’t a day for taxi availability.
About the Furusato tulip field. Set in a bucolic location with a wide river on one side and along a long stretch of the riverbank are a whole row of cherry blossom trees, currently not in the peak of blooms but ethereal nonetheless. Because of the many pop up stalls selling foodstuff, the cherry blossom trees are better seen from the river and not in the tulip farm itself. Boats for rent are available and today would have been ideal to be out on the water.
The farm itself is amazing, all colors of tulips as far as one can see and right at the entrance a windmill. There are picnic tables and benches to enjoy some peace and quiet to take in all that beauty. There is also an interesting stone bench with a cat and dog with a plaque that must be in memorial of an amazing pet or pets.
You can also remove the tulip you want from the ground with a potting shovel and buy it. The farm uses the proceeds to buy new bulbs for the next season.
There is a gift shop with souvenirs and snacks. This is where you can see the bus schedules for the train stations. There is seating in a room adjoining the gift shop.
There is also another structure across the road that sells agricultural produce. The soft serve ice cream is good.
All in all, a pleasant place to spend an hour or two or even a whole day if going boating or...
Read moreIt is like a mini Holland or Netherlands in Japan during spring time. We went there in the first week of April because they have their spring festival. You can see a wide field of different varieties of beautiful tulips and you can buy them too. You can also see a line of beautiful cherry blossoms in front of the big windmill with a wonderful view of the lake. In their spring festival, there were movable food stands in the area apart from the two shops (small buildings) where you can buy farmers’ local goods, food, snacks, and souvenirs. Children can also enjoy some shows like cute monkeys doing tricks, etc. This area becomes lively during spring time because of the tulips and cherry blossoms. But with the rest of the seasons, you can only enjoy the lake view, windmill, cycling, and buy some local goods at the two shops (small building). This place is also very popular with cyclists as they can safely cycle along the exclusive road for cycling and walking surrounding the lake. They can enjoy the lake view or drop by to rest and to have some refreshments or snacks at...

The Authentic Dutch Windmill "De Liefde" In the spring of 1994, Sakura City celebrated its 40th municipality. For this anniversary, the windmill "De Liefde" was built as the landmark of Sakura Furusato Square, and also as a symbol of friendlyrelations between the Netherlands and Sakura City. "De Liefde" is Japan's first authentic Dutch water pumping windmill actually being operated. It was manufactured mainly in the Netherlands and was assembled in Sakura with the cooperation of Dutch engineers. The four-story windmill tower, built from reinforced concrete and brick walls, measures 15.6 meters high.It has four sails that form 27.5 meters in diameter. Visitors can enter the tower and can closely observe mechanism of the internal structure, including the waterwheel which locates on the...
