Read moreA high and huge dam in Hokkaido stands 102.5 meters tall and was completed in the year 1972. Hoheikyo Dam is located inside Shikotsu Toya National Park and an admission fee is required to visit the dam.
Visitors will have to hop onto the electric bus service provided to arrive at the dam. Alternatively, visitors can take a 2km walk through a tunnel to arrive at the dam. No cars, motorcycles, or bicycles are allowed between the 2km from the dam entrance to the dam due to the environmental protection area.

Read moreBeautiful arch dam and tunnels. I unintentionally visited on a day that the bus was not in service, this was on 3 Sep 2025. The walk to the dam from the carpark js beautiful, through 2 long tunnels and passing by a waterfall. Takes about 30 minutes to walk one way.
Unfortunately the dam was under maintenance, so I could not stand on it, and had to view from a distance. The dam is curved and can be viewed from the observation deck up the hill or from the visitor centre.
The staff at the visitor centre had very limited English proficiency.
