If you go to Nanzoin Temple, you should also take an easy side trip to Hozanji temple. It's amazing. You can take a bus on weekdays, but it's a doable walk. Exit Nanzoin and walk on the road (Hwy 201) in the direction that doesn't go back toward the train station. There is a walking path on the right side of the road you can use. After an intersection with a stoplight, keep going straight for 2-3 minutes. Where the road bends left, there are 2 old, rickety structures on the right and a small road. Take the small road. It curves back and forth to alleviate some of the steepness, because it's a bit steep here. Going through all the switchbacks might take some time, but there are also small, cobblestone paths you can take that are quicker. They are maybe old Buddhist paths with stone markers. They are quite steep in places, but quicker (and more in nature). After you reach a very nice bathroom, just above that is the main road (201) again. Cross it and go to the left. In 100 yards or so, you will find the temple grounds. Make sure to go above and below so you also see the waterfall. The walk up will take 20-45 minutes depending on your route and stamina.
