10年以上前に訪れましたが、ここから関ヶ原の平地を見渡したのを覚えています。

西軍の挙兵を知った徳川家康は、戦いが長期化することにより厭戦気分が広まり、大阪で妻子を人質にとられている豊臣恩顧の大名、東北で上杉景勝を牽制している伊達政宗、九州で西軍と戦っている加藤清正らが裏切りに走る可能性を封じるため、短期間で勝敗を決する必要に迫られていたようです。

そのために、大垣城を素通りして近畿に進行すると見せかけて西軍に焦りを生じさせ、野戦に誘い出す手に出たようです。司馬遼太郎さんの小説でしきりに触れられていますが、家康にとっての関ヶ原の戦いは、彼がまだ若かった頃に、浜松城を素通りすると見せかけて徳川軍を三方原に誘い出して完膚なきまでに叩きのめした武田信玄の方法論をより大規模な形で応用したような感じがします。

そして、家康が決戦場に選んだのが、中山道、伊勢街道、北国街道などの様々な街道が交差し、古代の壬申の乱、中世の青野ヶ原の戦いの舞台となったここ関ヶ原でした。

ここからだと関ヶ原の主戦場方面が全く見えませーん！　律令国家で最大の内戦であった壬申の乱で勝利をおさめた天武天皇が、ここで兵士たちに地元名産の桃を配って士気を上げ、大勝利をあげた故事に倣って、縁起を担いで家康はココに最初の本陣を置きました。

しかし実際に来てみると、この位置からでは石田三成が本陣を置いた笹尾山は、手前の高地が邪魔して見ることが出来ません。それに関ヶ原の戦いの戦端が開かれ、初期の激戦地となった福島正則が担当する北側の戦場は、距離があり過ぎて状況がよく分からないのです。

ましてや戦闘初期においては、先に部隊を展開して有利な位置に陣取る西軍の方が優勢に闘いを進めており、家康はここで非常に焦りイライラしながら推移見守った事は間違いありません。せっかくですから、ここで「天下人」家康が取り乱す様子を想像すると楽しいかと（笑）。
