The Road to the Sky Observatory, also known as the “Road to Heaven” (天に続く道), is one of the most iconic scenic spots in Shari Town, eastern Hokkaido. Located along a 28-kilometer stretch of perfectly straight road, this viewpoint creates the optical illusion that the road rises into the sky—especially breathtaking at sunrise or sunset. Surrounded by vast fields, windbreak trees, and views stretching all the way to the Sea of Okhotsk, the observatory is a favorite among photographers, cyclists, and road trippers.
Built in 2018, the observatory features a simple wooden deck and a small parking area that can accommodate around eight cars. While there are no restrooms on site, the spot is open 24/7 and remains a peaceful place to pause, reflect, and take in the endless horizon.
