Beautiful coastline frequented by swimmers and surfers. It is an especially popular beach for avid surfers for it's relatively strong, steady waves. NOTE: A word of caution is in order. At times the undertow can be strong and unpredictable. While the image portrays a serene beach at rest, on March 11, 2011 in the afternoon, an earthquake shook the ocean floor out from this location. The ocean quickly receded (from storied accounts), and then, with a vengeance stormed onto the landscape, as a formidable wall of seawater, some 7 meters in hight, highlighted by local blue Tsunami historical markings. At a reported speed of a jet plane cruising at 500 miles an hour, and the power of several runaway locomotives, the mass of sea, slammed into the shoreline and obliterated everything in its path. Only a few hearty pine trees survived it's vengeance. After the sea returned to normal, some reported 3 to 7 tsunamis later, a large metal cargo containers, from an unknown cargo ship, lay helplessly stranded for awhile on this sandy beach. Around the corner of the first image, is another beautiful sandy beach which extends far off, as far as the eye can see, into the horizon. The Kroehler's loving called this streatch of beach the "Mile Beach." The name stuck. Why it was not referred to as the "Shobuta Beach," which is the actual formal name, or the "Kilometer Beach," a Japanese measurement for a distance, remains shrouded in mystery.
