Spectacular scenery and the chance to hike or do some “shower climbing” (climbing up the river itself). We did that and found it a lot of fun and very rewarding. We parked at Gulliver and walked to the river (20 minutes), then climbed up the river. It is pretty challenging at places so we went prepared with clothing fit for scrambling over wet rocks and plunging into deep water at certain points (think waterproof hiking boots etc). There are certain points where you need to use the ropes and chains provided to get further on. As such it is not really for kids or people unsure of climbing. Along the way you get to see many beautiful waterfalls and some places to jump in the river. On the return journey we walked along a path which leads you back a safer way. This place is very special for us and I do recommend it highly, but make sure you go fully prepared with the correct clothing for shower climbing if that’s what you plan to do.

We parked at gullivers village (400¥) and it’s ~20min to the trailhead past the village store on the right. Officially the route we went was closed and taped off but we didn’t have any problems. (there is a small part of the trail that is missing if you skip the way along the river, but even that is possible to pass) If you have never used chains or ladders while hiking I wouldn’t recommend it. If your comfortable with exposed hikes, scrambling and climbing it’s a lot of fun. We walked out back the same route we came and took about 2h.

Spectacular hike/climb along the course of a river with waterfalls! The danger is definitely over-hyped as there are plenty of chains/ladders/handles that make it definitely safe, provided you have a decent upper-body strength and you are not afraid of heights/slippery wet rocks. You may fall into the water upon the several river crossings due to the slippery rocks: we once crossed by walking into the river (without shoes) for added safety.
