Ida beach — Attraction in Taketomi

It's worth a visit to this beach. When I went it was quiet and peaceful with about 7 people on the beach in total. There are five ferries a day from Shirahama Port (at the end of road 215 on Iriomote, the only main road!).

The current timetable is attached but you can check the times by plotting the route on Google maps (we found that easier than trying to find a schedule in English online). We drove to the ferry port but there were buses as well. Once you arrive at Funauki port it's a short walk to the beach which is signposted.

The beach was beautiful, even on a slightly cloudy day like we had. The snorkelling was pretty good too - it stays quite shallow a long way out and we found the best snorkelling was a little further from the beach. We never went out of depth though. A lot of dead coral but we found a lot of living corals too and...

What a nice surprise to find this beautiful beach at the farthest point we went to in Iriomote. No infrastructure, just nature. Nice white sand beach and pristine clam sea. I only wished I could have spent longer here as we had to leave due to the boat schedule. Looking forward to visit Ida Beach...

八重山諸島でも一二を争う透明度の高いビーチ。単に美しい海を眺めるために訪れる外国人も多いが、ここは沖縄一ウミガメに出会えるビーチだから、是非シュノーケリングをお薦めしたい。ただし、波は穏やかでも、人影が疎らなビーチなので、ライフジャケットなど安全対策は自己責任で。ビーチはいきなり深くなるので、子供を遊ばせるには十分注意が必要だ。

行き方は、レンタカーでなければ、路線バスで西の終点白浜まで行き、白浜港から舟で船浮まで10分、船浮港から徒歩で集落を抜けて10～15分程度でビーチに着くので、迷うことはない。しかし、往路におけるバスと舟の接続が悪いので、白浜港での待ち時間は、唯一の屋良商店で買出しをしたり、美しい港風景をただ呆然と眺める余裕を持ちたい。なお、復路は、接続の良い時間帯もある。

手ぶらの場合は、白浜港の乗船口に、船浮集落にある「ぶーの家」の連絡先が広告されており、乗船前に電話してシュノーケルセットを用意してもらうといい(セットで一日1500円だが、500円で単品貸しも可)。ランチも提供しており、大阪出身の女主人は、話好きで、地元トークが面白く、危うく帰りの船に乗り遅れそうになった。5月訪問時は、金～月曜日営業だったので、営業日は確認して下さい。

ビーチは、海に向かって、左側に珊瑚礁や熱帯魚が集中し、右側は砂地が多いが、ウミガメは砂地の藻を食べることが多いので、どこで出会えるかは運任せ。

私の場合は、ビーチ中央部で入水直後、突然足下に甲長(甲羅の長さ)1メートル程度の巨大なウミガメを見つけ、ビックリ。しかし、カメは人間慣れしているのか、甲羅を触られても、平気で藻を食べており、私も長時間飽きることなく間近で観察できた。左側の珊瑚礁では、甲長60センチ位の小型のカメも泳いでいた。

なお、沖縄で見かけるウミガメの大部分は、アオウミガメかアカウミガメだそうだ。見分け方は、色や大きさの違いよりも、頭上の鱗形が二つならアオ、五つならアカなので、私が見た二匹のカメはいずれもアオウミガメだったということになる。
