It is a great walk along the well-maintained path to the large waterfall "Shomiyou waterfalls".
From the website; Shomyo Fall, one of the most unexplored spots in Toyama Prefecture, has the highest drop in Japan. The waterfall has a drop of 350 meters! The dynamic sight of the water splashing down is a sight to behold. It is a nationally designated scenic beauty and natural monument, and one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan, It has also been selected as one of the 100 most beautiful waterfalls in Japan and one of the 100 most beautiful soundscapes in Japan.
Another attraction of this area is that you can enjoy a different atmosphere each season. In spring, the valley is still covered with lingering snow, and much of the melted snow from the Tateyama Mountain Range flows into the valley, Alder Falls" appears on the right side of Shomyo Falls, and two waterfalls cascade down. A rare sight of waterfalls cascading in a V-shape can be seen here. When the water volume increases from spring to summer, Shomyo Falls overflows with great force, The spray from the waterfall basin resembles the release of water from a dam!
In the fall, the valley turns red and yellow, and the contrast between the richly colored leaves and the white waterfall creates a fantastic atmosphere.
At the Shomyo-daira Resting Area near the parking lot, visitors can learn more about Shomyo Falls through a model and video, At the rest house in the back of the rest area, visitors can enjoy delicious...
Read moreGreat - just not on a stinking hot sunny day like today - started out 7C on top of the mountain, then by midday in mid-May it was blazing hot like 30C walking from the car park (free parking for our rental car) on the 30 minute hike uphill to the falls. A sign for the walk promised regular seating rest stops - we found none. A little shade would have helped - there was scant. We almost expired and my partner wanted to quit before we got very far. Once we got to the top of the hill and saw it only like another km in the burning sun with no shade we said forget it and turned around. So park people - if you're gonna make people walk 30 minutes and promise them rest stops - please do so AND provide some shade as we quit before we had a heart attack on a hot day.
Oh yeah the falls you get a view of on the bus to Murodo/Alpine Route/Snow Corridor - so unless it's a nice day and you feel like walking 30 minutes uphill in no shade - and another 30 minutes back - I'd...
Read moreWe came across this spot when our Airbnb host suggested it after we canceled the alpine route tour due to bad weather forecast from the afternoon. We visited here in late October so there wasn’t as much water as in spring and I would certainly love to see all three waterfalls. We were on the first visitors to the site early in the morning and it was lovely to be able to take pics and enjoy the beautiful view without the crowds. But the sun wasn’t quite in the called yet and the angle of the sun also limited us from taking shots from certain angles. Maybe next time I will try midday or early afternoon. It is just a short walk and refreshing walk from the parking lot to the falls along an asphalt road and we saw many elderly and children walking the route too. The waterfall itself is huge and you can feel the spray on your face from the look out point. It really is beautiful and something I recommend if you are in the area of the alpine route as it’s just...
