Oshima Park Zoo — Attraction in Tokyo

Truly one of the highlights of visiting Oshima Island. Admission is FREE which surprised me. A pretty spacious zoo with numerous unique species that are rarely found elsewhere. 都立大島公園動物園は、無料とは思えないほど充実した施設です。猛獣こそいませんが、広々とした敷地でたくさんの動物たちがのびのびと暮らしています。

園内では、約一メートルもある陸ガメや、レッサーパンダ、ワオキツネザル、フタコブラクダなど、さまざまな動物を間近で見ることができます。特に、広い空間で群れで暮らすバーバリシープやワオキツネザルの姿は圧巻です。また、鳥類園では、柵越しではなく、同じ空間でクジャクやハワイガンなどの鳥たちを観察できるので、その迫力に驚く人も多いようです。

この動物園は、動物たちの健康を考えた展示方法や、清潔に保たれた園内など、管理が行き届いていることがうかがえます。平日は人が少ないので、動物たちもゆったりと過ごしていて、まるで貸し切りのような状態で楽しめます。

入園料や駐車場が無料なだけでなく、ベビーカーのレンタルも無料で行っているので、家族連れでも気軽に訪れることができます。ふれあい広場では、モルモットやウサギと触れ合うこともでき、子供から大人まで楽しめます。
