Midama-fudōson was undoubtedly the best place we’ve been to so far in Niigata and, in fact, one of the most beautiful and best locations I’ve visited in all of Japan, and that’s saying a lot as someone who has traveled to all 47 prefectures. If you only have time to visit one spot in the entire region, make sure it’s this one. The place exudes an incredibly sacred energy that you can truly feel when you’re there. Surprisingly, or perhaps not so surprisingly, there were only six of us, three couples, in the entire temple grounds. It’s just one of those hidden gems that you won’t find mentioned at all in travel blogs, and I sincerely hope it remains that way—we just stumbled upon it by chance because it’s only a 15-minute drive from Tsunan Sunflower Field, where we originally intended to go. The experience was beyond amazing and beautiful; I was so moved that I literally wanted to cry as we stepped inside and witnessed this Buddhist shrine. I’m filled with immense gratitude towards those managing the temple, as they don’t seem to expect anything in return, not even requiring entrance fees.
