Zaō Quasi-National Park is a protected mountainous area of Japan’s Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures, in northern Honshu. The park centers on the Zaō Onsen hot spring resort, with trails leading up the volcanic peaks of Mt. Zaō. Other natural features include Okama crater lake, known as “Five Color Pond,” and giant conifers that become “ice monsters” in the snow. The park’s ski resorts are popular in winter.
