Okama — Attraction in Zao

Great spot. Was dropped off and hiked up from a lower parking spot (hike was 1.8 km to the top), which afforded some amazing views along the way, and a bit of sweat. Did it with 2 preteen kids who were just fine but parents would need to keep a close eye on younger ones given some precipitous edges to one side. The shrine at the top is lovely, if a bit busy with people who park at the nearby parking lot.

If you prefer to just drive up, there is a parking lot right at the top with plenty of spots, and an easy walk down to see the lake. It is still fairly rocky so while some were doing it in street shoes, a pair of runners at a minimum and even better some walking boots is likely recommended. It also gets a bit windy and cold (we went in October) so bring a jacket and even a pair of gloves for comfort.

Lastly, the ski chalet type restaurant on the second floor of the service building on the top did a surprisingly great job delivering the basic stick to your ribs curry rice, Tonkatsu, karage and their fries were extra great. Ramen also looked great but can’t independently verify :-) Could have been the hike up and cold wind that ensured food tasted good, but it did! Plus there are great views from the tables. It is the standard buy tickets and pass to the staff but for those who need it, the menu is translated into English.

There is an option to hike even further to a second nearby peak. My kids weren’t having it but it looked like a nice hike. If I did it again I’d leave the time to add another few km doing the other hike (though would really want to dress warmly as that peak is more exposed than the one closer to...

去年の11月4日、連休の土曜に、 家族3人、レンタカーで訪れました。

薬師の湯をチェックアウト後、一路、 蔵王エコーラインへ。

去年は、気温が例年より暖かかったので、 エコーラインが、まだ閉鎖されておらず。

いつもの年なら、積雪のため、 11月3日頃には閉鎖されます。 てっきり、無理だと諦めていたのですが。

ラッキー🍀なことに… なんと、1ヶ月前位、 閉鎖は11月6日からと、判明(⁠≧⁠▽⁠≦⁠)

急遽、御釜の見学プランを、 旅程に組み込みました。

しかし、ネット検索してわかったのですが…。 蔵王の御釜は、地元の方でさえ、 数回訪れた後に、 やっと、まともに見ることが叶う、 なかなかの難易度、 激ムズな、高嶺の花！

1回目からその姿を拝ませて頂ける事は、 あまり無いそう。 仙台に住む知人は、 4度目にして、やっと拝めたそうです。 別の山形の知人も、4度目に成功(⁠･⁠o⁠･⁠;⁠)

知人によれば、 しかも、11月初めの当地付近は、 雪景色でも、紅葉でもなく、緑もなく。 まったく何も無い、枯れ木の、 中途半端な時期。

太陽の光も弱いので、 御釜のエメラルド色も鮮やかに映えず、 美しさがイマイチかも？、との事。

でも、夫が休みをとれるタイミングもなかなか無いので、 見られなければ、改めて、 トライすればいいや。 とにかく、行くだけは行ってみよう♪

と、夫と娘にも、知人の話や検索結果を 伝え、宿を10時に出発。

宿の方が、 これから御釜に行くの？ 今日は、ここは曇りだけど…御釜（山の上）とは、天気が違うからなぁ。 見られるといいね！と、 言ってくれました。

温泉宿の点在する町を走り抜けながら、 エコーラインを目指すと、 急に、蔵王の神社の鳥居が現れたので、 あわてて、 運転中の主人のキャップを脱がせ、 私は、一礼。 旅と運転の無事を祈りつつ。

エコーライン（有料）に入ると、 木立を走り、とても清々しい気分に(⁠^⁠^⁠)

連休とはいえ、目的地の御釜には、 紅葉も、雪景色も（4月の再開直後は、両サイドが雪の壁だそう🤩）、緑もナシ。

中途半端な時期のせいか、空いている…。

大渋滞を覚悟していたのに、 ずっ〜と、終始快適な、高原ドライブ(⁠♡⁠ω⁠♡⁠ ⁠)⁠ ⁠~⁠♪

あまりに、快適なカーブ続きで、 後部座席の娘は、爆睡（笑）

樹木の合間を走り抜ける エコーラインは、最高に気持ちよくて、 ワタシ的に、好きな場所(⁠ ⁠˘⁠ ⁠³⁠˘/⁠♥

頂上の御釜付近は、 ハンパな時期とはいえ、

ふもと付近の、緑色の混ざる紅葉から、 だんだん、赤や黄色の美しい紅葉だけに。 やがて、グレーの枯れ木混じりになり、 最後には、ライトグレーの枯れ木ばかり…

その標高差によるグラデーション変化、 秋から冬への季節の移ろいを、 カーブを上がっていく間に、 目撃😘

ホント、軽井沢をドライブしている気分。 凛と澄んだ、空気感。

スキーシーズンで賑わう前の、当地の、 静かでキレイな、一瞬の 季節のはざまを、満喫できました♥

印象に残る、素晴らしい思い出です。 （爆睡の娘以外は…笑） 大渋滞を予想していたのに、これは 嬉しい誤算〜。

もう、永遠に続いてほしいなぁ(⁠✿⁠^⁠‿⁠^⁠) と思うエコーラインでしたが、 枯れ木だけになって、程なく、目的地に。 （蔵王ハイラインに入った？）

枯れ木と、尾根の山肌がむき出しの、 頂上付近に、到着。

広〜い山の上の駐車場は、駐車もラク。 もっと見頃の行楽シーズンであれば、 こんなに広くても、混みそうです。 スペース見つけるのに、一苦労するかも。

上に、頂上レストハウスが見え、 上がっていきます。 幸い、ここまで、天気は今にも降りそうながらも、何とか、重い曇天をキープ。

急げ〜、雨降ってくるョ。 御釜、見えなくなっちゃうかも〜

と、夫と目覚めた娘に声をかけ、 防寒と雨天対策の上着を着込みながら （麓とは気温違うので、必ず上着や雨天用の服、雨具は必要！）、 レストハウスへ急ぎます。

ハウス内は、 御釜の見学を終えた人（午前中が見える確率高い）と、これからの人で、混雑。 温かい食べ物や飲み物を売る店には、 長い行列ができていました。 時間は、正午前の11時半頃。

天気的に、一刻を争うと判断し、 トイレにもよらず、 レストハウスを出、まっすぐ御釜へ。

ゴツゴツの火山岩の岩場 （靴はスニーカー）ですが、 柵が整備され、展望箇所まで、 迷うことはなし。 写真を撮ったりしながら、 岩の間を進むと…

おお～っ！！！ 見えました！！＼⁠(⁠◎⁠o⁠◎⁠)⁠／

人々の合間から、遠望ですけど、 はっきりと、くっきりと。

見えないほうがデフォルトという、 高嶺のパワースポットが、 奇跡的に、そのお姿を😍(⁠☆⁠▽⁠☆⁠)

来るまでに、 普通は見えないらしいよ〜、 という話を、散々刷り込んでおいた夫が、 見えた、あれだよ！と、嬉しそう。

風景を撮影しつつ、 私がのんびり降りていく間に、 夫と娘はテンション上がり、 どんどん先を急ぎます。

御釜に近づける最前線（この先は立入禁止）の展望箇所まで来て、眺めます。

確かに、御釜の周囲は、 冬目前の、最晩秋で。 グレーの岩肌があるばかり。

でも、その真ん中で、

青緑の水をたたえた、 きれいな御釜が、 なんと神秘的に見えることか…。

昔からのパワースポット、 人々を魅了してきただけに、

何とも形容し難い、 大自然の貫禄、美しさがあるのです✨

最も地味、と言われた この季節でさえ、この威容。

思わず目を離せなくなり、釘づけ。 引き込まれてしまいそう♡⁠(⁠⁠ ⁠ਊ⁠ ⁠⁠0⁠⁠.⁠

Okama looks absolutely gorgeous in the early to mid April period, when the snow is partially covering the surrounding slopes, partly showing the brown earth below. Under a blue sky, this 残雪 (Zansetsu) scene offer in my opinion one of the best view of Okama. These are photos were taken at 13/4/2024 after a 45min hike from the Zao Jizo Sancho Station 蔵王ロープウェイ 地蔵山頂駅. Something to take note of: (1) the last descending cable car leave at 4:45pm at this time of the year, (2) The trails are mostly covered under loose melting snow, those trail without snow are very muddy. Although I did it with just a gaiter and not fully waterproof shoe, I would strongly suggest good waterproof shoe, gaiter, snowshoe or trekking pole.
