Wadi bin Hammad is one of the most beautiful and exciting hikes I have been on. A warm water wadi, where we walked up to our ankles and sometimes knees in the water, with lush, palm tree-clad surroundings. Somewhere the rocks like a cave, closed in above our heads, with many small sources and water falls... it was a fantastic sight! Like in Avatar!
In the wadi you can hike to the village of Ghor Al-Haditha, which is a full day hike of about 20km. You will need to arrange a transfer to the end of the trail. The route is exposed to the sun for a significant part of the way, so be prepared for this and don't do it in the summer! Most people, like us, walked to the end of the cave-like canyon, which took about 3.5km and 2.5 hours round trip. No difficulty with childrens, but water shoes or hiking shoes with holes are a must! Quick drying water hiking clothing (e.g. for kayaking) is advisable. Hiking sticks are a relief on wet rocks, but not compulsory. At least 1 litre of water per person, hat and sunscreen are mandatory! Status of April 2024: The ticket office was not working and, according to word of mouth, it is now forbidden to walk through it. In fact, we had hired a local jeep and guide in advance, who drove us (7 people) from our minibus to the entrance for 30 JOD and then he guided us through the canyon. He shared a lot of interesting information and kept the other self-proclaimed and pushy guides away from the entrance. You can reach the entrance by renting 4x4 car, the rocky way not dangerous, but needed some experience of offroad driving. You can rent guide in the entrance area, but really not important for short walking. But, perhaps you not be able to get in without a guide! You will see the situation! The toilet at the entrance was working. A previous flood had rearranged the terrain, so you don't need a ladder or special knowledge to get to cave-like canyon. The environment was clean, except for the nearest site of entrance. The place wasn't busy, we met just one another small company (6 person).
I recommend this walk...
