Wadi bin Hammad is one of the most beautiful and exciting hikes I have been on. A warm water wadi, where we walked up to our ankles and sometimes knees in the water, with lush, palm tree-clad surroundings. Somewhere the rocks like a cave, closed in above our heads, with many small sources and water falls... it was a fantastic sight! Like in Avatar!

In the wadi you can hike to the village of Ghor Al-Haditha, which is a full day hike of about 20km. You will need to arrange a transfer to the end of the trail. The route is exposed to the sun for a significant part of the way, so be prepared for this and don't do it in the summer! Most people, like us, walked to the end of the cave-like canyon, which took about 3.5km and 2.5 hours round trip. No difficulty with childrens, but water shoes or hiking shoes with holes are a must! Quick drying water hiking clothing (e.g. for kayaking) is advisable. Hiking sticks are a relief on wet rocks, but not compulsory. At least 1 litre of water per person, hat and sunscreen are mandatory! Status of April 2024: The ticket office was not working and, according to word of mouth, it is now forbidden to walk through it. In fact, we had hired a local jeep and guide in advance, who drove us (7 people) from our minibus to the entrance for 30 JOD and then he guided us through the canyon. He shared a lot of interesting information and kept the other self-proclaimed and pushy guides away from the entrance. You can reach the entrance by renting 4x4 car, the rocky way not dangerous, but needed some experience of offroad driving. You can rent guide in the entrance area, but really not important for short walking. But, perhaps you not be able to get in without a guide! You will see the situation! The toilet at the entrance was working. A previous flood had rearranged the terrain, so you don't need a ladder or special knowledge to get to cave-like canyon. The environment was clean, except for the nearest site of entrance. The place wasn't busy, we met just one another small company (6 person).

I recommend this walk...

A great place away from the city where one can hike and get a water splash. If you are coming from the Amman - Aqaba highway, there are 2 routes to this place. Both routes involve driving through villages, giving the trip a feeling of indulgence with the locals. Both routes merge into one route that is a steep downhill, fits one car, and in some places the road is a mud road. Extreme care is required while driving, yet it is very doable and possible. Once you get to the hiking area, there is enough parking, there are caravans for changing clothes, and there are restrooms. There is no cellular signal here, and so you are advised to place your phone on “flight mode” so that your phone battery doesn’t drain. Entering the place is free, but you will bump into a few people who claim to be taking care of the place, and would ask for a voluntary payment of whatever you wish. With the rough conditions to get there, giving them a small amount is no harm. The hiking trail requires 1 hour in each direction to get to the end. When you walk with the water flow, the hiking is smooth, yet having a stick is very recommended so that you know where you are stepping into (especially when it gets deep). The deepest it can get is 50 cms. Some rocks are slippery, thus wearing proper shoes is also recommended. When returning back, you walk in the opposite direction of the water flow, thus you walk with friction. However, it is easier to walk since you can find your walking path easier. Get some water, juice, and snacks, especially if the weather is hot. They don’t sell anything in this place. The place needs some care by collecting all the litter thrown around. The large stone towards the end of the trail is also something that needs a solution. The road to this place needs better attention by the authorities.

We had an amazing time at Wadi Bin Hammad. The road leading to the Wadi was not too scary or difficult to navigate. We started early at around 10 am, and we believe it made the drive easier as we where the only people on the road. Upon arrival at the entrance, we paid 5 dinar per person. The person at the entrance suggested that we hire a guide for an additional fee of 15 dinar. He explained that the first kilometer of the hike is accessible without a guide but a guide is mandatory for the rest. However, we opted to only do the first bit of the hike but ended up walking further. There was nobody who checked it. The hike was incredibly beautiful, the water was warm, and it was suitable for families. It was a great way to spend a morning or afternoon, and we absolutely loved it. We were there in March in the morning, and on the way down the river, we didn't see anyone. We only saw one family on the way back. We had a lovely time at Wadi Bin Hammad.
