A ruined castle on a hilltop that has a mix of Christian and Islamic touch to it. Car parking and tickets are at the premises entrance, and then you walk a few 100 meters upwards to arrive at the castle entrance. At the castle entrance, there are several directions to walk to, and is worth exploring all. There is a church, a soap manufacturing facility, a small museum, and others. Some stones have writings on them. The views to the Shobak valley are quite a thing. The place is quite ruined, and deserves maintenance and extra care. Make sure you walk with care. Expect to spend around 30 minutes here.

The castle is perched on a rocky hill overlooking the surrounding landscape, and is constructed primarily out of local limestone. It is surrounded by a deep moat and a series of walls and towers that would have made it difficult for attackers to breach. Shobak Castle played an important role in the Crusades, and was the site of numerous battles and sieges over the years. It changed hands multiple times between the Crusaders and the Muslim armies, and was eventually abandoned in the 14th century as the balance of power in the region shifted away from the Crusaders.

A beautiful site with so much history to unravel, the only reason I'm not rating as 5 is because there is *a lot* of renovation and construction taking place which meant I couldn't explore any of the tunnels I was reading about! It offers a great viewpoint for some birdwatching with binoculars during the spring and fall.

If you like a little bit of adventure, this is an ABSOLUTE MUST SEE!!! We went to Shobak castle after visiting Dana. It's very close, easy to find on Google Maps. Park at the visitor center on the left, then walk to the actual ruins. The entrance is free with Jordan pass or 1JOD without. You will most likely be the only tourists there, this little jewel is not renowned yet. The castle hasn't been reconstructed so most of it is in ruins: it's completely authentic and it has a lot of feels to it. Nothing is closed so you can walk freely absolutely everywhere and explore the whole castle at will. The incredible views and the peaceful atmosphere will let you soak in the beauty of this site. Once you are done visiting the visible part of the castle, head for the SECRET TUNNEL... Just ask the staff at the entrance to point you the right way, and head towards the most unique experience! No spoilers but make sure to bring a torch or to have battery on your phone to use as torch (not suitable for kids or if you are not in good physical conditions/ claustrophobic). Once you find the tunnel keep going carefully down the slippery stairs until you see the light... Then climb the ladder and come back into the outside world! The walk back up is a bit long but the experience is...

I loved visiting Montreal! Since I was young I've enjoyed learning about the Crusaders and they were one of the main reasons why I wanted to explore Jordan. Beautiful Arabic inscriptions dating back to the 1200's can be found in here too. Warning to those who visit Shobak castle as a group (+2) of visitors: there is 1 local guides walking within the castle who will give a 30mins tour of Shobak and ask for payment later (15JOD) . They either introduce themselves as local guides or just interpose themselves and start chatting with one of the members of the group and start guiding around. If you feel like having a local guide, it won't be an issue for you. However, if you do not wish to pay for a local guide, I am informing you that this most likely...

This castle is not very big - it takes around 1 hour to walk around and also do the "secret" tunnel. The castle itself is nothing very special - it's mostly in ruins and there is not much to see in the structure itself. But, the views from the top all-around are spectacular. The landscape is interesting - the land looks like it is flowing up and down around the castle. Even the views of the castle as you approach it are very good. For us the most fun part was going through a hidden tunnel (apparently there are many) that took us from the castle to the road below. It was a pretty tight place, completely dark, slippery in places, full of dust and we were crouching most of the time, but we had fun, little scary...
