Fascinating remains of a Romano-Byzantine-military and monastic complex made of square and circular towers with latter Umayyad renovations consisting of several rooms around a courtyard. All made of black volcanic basalt. The adjacent lake to its west ads exponentially to its air of exploration and mystique.
In our visit there there was a 'wow!' moment upon first glance. The water, the strikingly green grass around it was all enveloped in blank rock desert. There were falcons and egrets flying high above or razing the water's surface. Sheep were grazing in the marsh land wading knee deep in the water, the stuff of fiction novels.
