The Castle is constructed from local black basalt rocks, the castle is a square structure with 80-meter-long walls encircling a large central courtyard. The courtyard features a small mosque, possibly dating from Umayyad times, and four oblong towers at each corner of the outer wall. The Azraq Castle has played a crucial role in military history. The Romans established a military outpost here in the 3rd century AD, and later, the Mamluks redesigned and fortified the castle in the 13th century CE. During World War I, the castle served as the headquarters of T.E. Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia, during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire. You should visit this site as soon as you can.

Qaser al-azraq is one of Jordan's historic castles. The Qaser al-azraq or al-azraq Castle was built of black basalt. The al-azraq Castle is located in the center of the Blue Oasis, 100 km east of Amman, the Jordanian capital. The castle was originally built as a fortress for the Nabataeans or Romans, and the Mamluks rebuilt it in the thirteenth century AD. al-azraq Oasis is the only permanent source of clean water in the surrounding desert, which is about 12,000 square miles, so this oasis attracts large numbers of migratory birds en route to their destinations.

One of the dessert castles - didn't find it very interesting. You won't need more than half an hour here. Visit only if you have something else planned too for the day. Doesn't seem popular amongst tourists too..It's made up of black stone. No entrance fees. Parking available. Main entrance door too is made up of stone. It was fun to try to open and shut this very heavy door All in all, I feel the dessert castles can be dropped from the itinerary.

This place has a centuries-old history: its foundation dates back to the time of the Roman Empire (AD III) although the structure visible today is the product of reconstruction in medieval times (AD XIII). The fort was also used in the winter between 1917 and 1918 by the Arab army marching to Damascus during the Arab Revolt. Personally I think you could miss it …

Important ancient castle, 95 km from Amman in north east Jordan, first built by the romans to protect the empire against the Persians, then used by Byzantines, rebuilt by the Muslims, latest use of it through the Arab revolution after the first world war against the Turks. No concrete used, only volcanic stones layed one on the other then plastered. Nice to visit

Description
Qasr al-Azraq is a large fortress located in present-day eastern Jordan. It is one of the desert castles, located on the outskirts of present-day Azraq, roughly 100 km east of Amman. Its strategic value came from the nearby oasis, the only water source in a vast desert region.
