St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church, also known as Niranam Valiyapally, is a historically significant church located in Niranam, near Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta, Kerala. This ancient church is believed to have been established by St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, in AD 54, making it one of the earliest Christian centers in India. The church has undergone several renovations over the centuries, with the most recent one completed in 2000. Architecturally, the church features elements inspired by Hindu temple design, including intricate carvings at the base of its granite cross. Inside, it has five altars, with the main one dedicated to Saint Mary. There are two altars on the north and south of the main one. The altar on the northern side is consecrated to Saint George and the altar on the southern side is consecrated in the name of Mar Behanan. There are two smaller altars, to the front of the main altar. The north among these is in the name of Saint Thomas. The southern among the small altars is consecrated to Saint Stephen. The church hosts annual festivals, especially the Niranam Perunnal, which honors St. Thomas. The church is easily accessible from Thiruvalla railway station which is about 7 km far.

The oldest church and very close to Parumala church but many people do not know about this church as every one goes only to Parumala church. I went to this place as I saw a sign board while returning from Parumala to the left. May be a km or 2 from Parumala. You do not have any shops or the big hypes as in Parumala here. But the church is like the real church with good old Architecture. There is a museum nearby and a big cross at the entrance. There is a caretaker who explains everything about the church and its history which is centuries old than Parumala church.

Not only is the church visually impressive, but the 'Smrithi Mandiram' located next to the church also offers a glimpse into the past through its collection of artifacts. The items on display are fascinating and provide a unique insight into the history of the church and the community it serves. While it's definitely worth visiting, it's important to note that the room marked museum contains only a limited number of objects. Overall, this church is definitely worth a visit, particularly for those interested in history and architecture.

It is claimed that this church was founded by St.Thomas, one of Christ's twelve apostles sometime after his arrival in 52 AD. This makes it the oldest church complex in India. But the current structure is new as this church has been rebuilt many times over the centuries. Two huge stone crosses survive from the past, with inscriptions which haven't been deciphered by historians to this date.
