Almaty Zoo — Attraction in Almaty

Such a big shame. This beautiful zoo is filled up with very undereducated people. Eventhough the zoo brought all the animals in the world, they're treated like prisoners in jail.

People bring their children here and knocking every single cage. I was shocked that even ladies and guys are doing the same thing. They scream and yell on the cage, and try to move the animals.

Even worse in exotic animals exhibition. They turn on their flash light to take a photo of bat and other night life animals. The animals seemed extremely nervous and frightened by these crazy people. Nobody follows the warning signs.

Hope they put the price on double and hire people in every exhibition to stop those stupid people. I guess 700 Tenge(less than 2USD) for the ticket is too cheap and people...

Not a bad zoo for such a small price. 700 tenge for adults; tickets for children aged 5-12 are 200 tenge. They have many types of animals in the zoo, all looked healthy and well fed. Some animals have a winter pavilion so that they wont feel cold during winter. The place is quite big (21 hectares), and I was made to understand that the Almaty Zoo is home to over 5,000 animals from all over the globe. Operating hours may differ during winter, may close at 5pm, other times they are open til 7-8pm daily. The website says 9pm though. I didnt see any food stalls open during winter around 10am when i was there. We were the first customers on that day (weekend) , so better come prepared with snacks. The zoo was much bigger than I expected with quite a large variety of animals and many large birds of prey. It is showing its age in places and is clearly struggling with a lack of investment. The bear enclosures were tiny and it was sad to see. Some of the other animals had plenty of space to roam around. We spent 3 hours there.

However, one must consider the price of entry - £1.42 for adults and free for children. That needs repeating - £1.42!! That’s less than €2 or $2. Basically the price of a bottle of water. So at that price one cannot expect anything better, except perhaps a bigger enclosure for the brown bear, which after all is Kazakhstan’s most...
