Arabuko Sokoke Forest KFS Gede Gate (Main Gate) — Attraction in Jilore ward

I went with a group of students and hired two guides with the intention of seeing elephants. Although we arrived on time, we were taken on an unsolicited walk through the forest, which wasted time. By the time they finally brought us to the elephant area, it was already getting dark and we didn’t see any elephants.

One of our buses couldn’t fit down the path, so we had to walk in small groups, but soon they realized the park was closing. We ended up scattered, with some students alone at the entrance in the dark, unsupervised. It was our van driver, acting on his own, who rescued those left along the path in the dark.

Die Wege sind in einem sehr schlechten Zustand, von den Elefanten umgerissene Bäume werden einfach liegen gelassen. Wenn unser Tour Guide keine Panga dabeigehabt hätte, wären wir wohl gar nicht mehr weitergekommen, es gibt nämlich auch keine Wendemöglichkeiten. Die beiden Baumhäuser wurden abgerissen, fraglich, ob es neue geben wird. Highlights sind der View Point (Nyari) und der vordere Bereich, den man zu Fuß durchstreift. Hier konnten wir Suni Antilopen und Rüsselhündchen aus nächster Nähe beobachten. Auch ein paar Meerkatzen. Das spartanisch angelegte Wasserloch ist eine Enttäuschung. Eine kleine Schlammpfütze, an der man mit Glück zwischen 18 Uhr und 19:30 die kleinen Waldelefanten beobachten kann. Nachts kommen auch Büffel. Da die Tiere den Park an keiner Stelle verlassen können, ist das einzige noch vorhandene Wasserloch definitiv zu klein! Die früher dort lebenden Flußpferde sind abgewandert vor der vollständigen Isolation des Gebietes oder zum Teil verdurstet, man findet skelettierte Überreste im Wald. Die temporären Swamps (Tümpel) sind seit Jahren ausgetrocknet, dies war früher ein Highlight für Ornithologen. Es muss dringend mehr für die wildlebenden Tiere im Park...
