Well, it's true.. water does flow up the hill, a bottle of water rolls up the hill and a car driver who was passing by, put his car in neutral position and the car rolled up the hill. It really is a marvel. I met a local guide by the name of Albernas. They will show you all the phenomena for a very small fee... it's worth it. They fetch the water from a small stream that is flowing directly beneath the hill. Talk to the guides and you'll be quite happy you stopped by. Albernas is very patient and explains very well too. I didn't have time to test my motorbike as i was headed to Machakos. Kya Mwilu hills was a good half hour stop. The road is good all the way from the Mombasa Highway, as i came from Nairobi. The road meanders a lot, with sharp turns.. a good riding experience. There are no signs on the road you are at the Kituluni Hills... look out for the guides on the roadside and you will know you have arrived.

The experience is magnificent. There are always locals who will pour bottles of water on the road for demonstration then ask for a tip ranging between Ksh50-200. Preferably carry your own water. You can roll the bottle of water uphill or pour the water and watch it flow uphill. But the best experience is on a bike. You'll feel the full effect of rolling uphill and riding downhill. There's nothing around there though. It's just a road winding up a hill. No stop over spots, view points or shops. But the road is not very busy so you can safely drive your car up and downhill without much disturbance.

I was here for the 4th time since 2006. A Chinese contractor reconstructed the road in 2017, courtesy of Governor Alfred Mutua's efforts, but the uphill effect is still there. The anomalous area is on the right hand side of the picture. To me it looks uphill. I will let you know when I find out more details about what causes it. I interviewed some locals and they say the Kyalo-Mwilu story was on the left hand side which is different from the anomalous area. The place is called Kituluni which means half because the road had originally ended abruptly further down the hill.

Four of us passed there twice a day from 30th Sept to 3rd Oct 2012. We tested the vehicle on 1.9.12 as it reversed uphill in free gear 4 over 10 metres. Then it moved forward uphill 4 about twelve metres in free on 3.10 .12. At this this time we also poured water from a 500cl bottle onto the tarmac of the road and it clearly definetely and very visibly fast flowed uphill for about a metre before it ran out. I had heard the stories of this phenomenon but never even considered it to be likeky to say the least. Now here I was in a team of responsible people and witnessed it with my own eyes and even tested it, and it was real. It was stranger than any fiction I have read, and I Have read...

It is my home place and generally in this hill water flows up the hill instead of down the hill. It is also lighter to drive up the hill than to drive down hill. Cars put on neutral gear here move by themselves towards uphill side. It is recommended you bring water to test yourself since here their is water shortage although you can never lack someone here willing to go and fetch the water for you from the kyamwilu ( as the local name of the village is) hidden water points. Come and see the magic with your own eyes and you will be able to see many more other tourist attraction sites in machakos county. N:B the place is not so far away from machakos town centre. Very...
