We got a taste of being up close and personal with giraffes at The Giraffe Centre @giraffecentre_ in Nairobi, Kenya before our afternoon tea experience with them at @thegiraffemanor Stay tuned for a reel showcasing the latter. P.S. The last time I (Joy) was at the Giraffe Center was as an 8 year old, on a school field trip. It was a nostalgic feeling going back as an adult. 🙂

As I stepped into the enchanting world of the Giraffe Centre, a sense of wonder and excitement filled the air. Located on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, this conservation center is a haven for the majestic Rothschild giraffes, offering visitors a unique opportunity to interact with these gentle giants up close. The sprawling grounds of the Giraffe Centre were lush and green, surrounded by native trees and vegetation. The melodious chirping of birds created a symphony of nature, enhancing the serene atmosphere. The moment I entered, I was greeted by the friendly staff, who provided me with interesting insights about the center's conservation efforts. The highlight of my visit was the chance to encounter the beautiful Rothschild giraffes. These graceful creatures, with their long necks and distinctive coat patterns, roamed freely in the expansive giraffe sanctuary. As I approached the feeding platform, a wave of anticipation washed over me. With a handful of specially prepared pellets in my hand, I stood at the platform's edge, waiting for the giraffes to approach. Within moments, a towering giraffe named Daisy gracefully extended her long neck towards me, her large, soulful eyes fixed on the treat in my hand. I held my breath as she gently plucked the pellets from my outstretched palm with her prehensile lips. The touch of her velvety tongue on my skin was both thrilling and surreal. As I interacted with these magnificent creatures, I learned about the conservation efforts dedicated to protecting and preserving the endangered Rothschild giraffes. The Giraffe Centre plays a vital role in breeding and reintroducing these giraffes into the wild, ensuring their survival for future generations. Beyond the giraffe feeding experience, the Giraffe Centre offered a wealth of educational opportunities. I explored the informative displays and exhibits, delving into the biology, behavior, and conservation challenges faced by giraffes in the wild. The dedicated staff were always on hand to answer questions and share their knowledge, further enriching the experience. Venturing outside the main building, I embarked on a leisurely walk along the nature trails that meandered through the adjacent forest. The lush surroundings provided a peaceful retreat, where I could reflect on the beauty and importance of preserving Kenya's rich biodiversity. Before leaving the Giraffe Centre, I visited the gift shop, where a range of locally made crafts and souvenirs were available. By supporting these initiatives, I knew I was contributing to the ongoing conservation efforts of the center. As I bid farewell to the Giraffe Centre, I carried with me not only cherished memories but also a profound appreciation for the tireless work being done to protect these magnificent creatures. The experience had been a glimpse into the intricate harmony of nature and a reminder of our responsibility to safeguard our natural heritage. The Giraffe Centre had provided me with an extraordinary opportunity to connect with giraffes in a way I had never imagined possible. It was a visit that left an indelible mark on my heart, igniting a passion for wildlife conservation and a deep admiration for the remarkable beauty of these gentle giants.

This is a great place to visit on the weekend with family or friends. Avoid visiting close to closing time, there tends to be huge crowds in the late afternoon hours. If you coming from town take Naboka Sacco at Bus Station and alight at Karen Hardy center. The bus ride costs about .7USD. After you alight it's about a 15 to 20minute walk from there or you can take one of the motorcycle taxis at the bus stop. Should be about half a dollar for the motorcyle. The place has been redone since I was last there. The ticket costs about 3 dollars. For a local that's kinda on the high end. Make sure you have mobile money or a bank card. The staff are very courteous although and direct you the right way to go. I found a huge crowd when I was there and feeding the giraffes took some real jostling. You get some pellets from staff to feed the giraffes. The giraffes find it easier it eat off your hand than the little pellet containers. Sometimes they get bored and you might have to be patient to feed them. There's a little restaurant on site and the gift shop. The gift shop is rather pricey although it's for a good course.
