The Sacred Mountains, which we today call the Accursed Mountains, is truly a shame that we continue to refer to this place by the name given by Ottoman or Serbian occupiers.

The Sacred Mountains: A Land of Majesty and Misplaced Names

Rising like an ancient guardian of Albanian heritage, the Sacred Mountains (often misnamed as the “Accursed Mountains”) stand as a testament to the enduring beauty and spirit of our land. These peaks, with their rugged trails, pristine lakes, and untamed wilderness, are not cursed but blessed—a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural splendor.

It is a disservice to their majesty to continue using the names imposed by foreign occupiers, be it Ottoman or Serbian. These mountains are a living legacy of our ancestors, their strength echoing in every stone and stream. They symbolize resilience, freedom, and an untamed spirit that no conqueror could suppress.

Imagine standing atop a peak, breathing in the crisp alpine air, and gazing upon a horizon painted with hues of green and blue. These are not “accursed” lands; they are sacred, a sanctuary for those seeking adventure, inspiration, or a connection to something greater than themselves.

Let us reclaim their identity and honor their true essence. The Sacred Mountains are not just a destination; they are a pilgrimage to the heart of...

Awesome place, breathtaking views. But huge area, find someone that knows what they are doing and/or do your homework first. Paths can go from easy to steep and rough pretty quick. Pay attention to trail markers and maps very carefully. It is all awesome, would not trade experience for the world, but be prepared if you go off...

Pay attention to trail markers and maps very carefully. It is all awesome, would not trade experience for the world, but be prepared if you go off main paths, etc.

It took three hours hiking from the ground to reach the Lake. The combination of mountain, lake and forest made this place naturally beautiful. I was fortunate enough have a team of local students of Prishtina University. They told me all story of Rugova Canyon like as professional guide. Here are few snaps of my trip:
