Beyond Batroun, on the highway in the direction of Tripoli, along the Nahr el-Jawz river, an unusual fortification built on a rocky spur can be seen on the right, like a mirage that enchants you from afar. The sandstone blocks were brought in from the nearby coast, and it is certain that it was built by Emir Fakhreddine II from 1624 onwards. In fact, it is speculated, not incorrectly, that it was probably built on top of a pre-existing Crusader defence structure. You get there via a steep staircase and inside there are many dark, somewhat ghostly rooms, but the view is worth the effort. Enjoy your visit/Buona visita زيارة جيدة

قلعة المسيلحة، إحدى القلاع التاريخية في لبنان والتي لا تزال في ذاكرة البعض حين كانت مطبوعة على ورق النقد من فئة 25 ليرة قبل الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية. كلمة المسيلحة تعني المكان المُحَصَّن، هي أيضا" تصغير لكلمة مسلح. أما إذا أردنا الغوص في التاريخ، فتاريخ القلعة التي تقع على الضفة اليمنى لنهر الجوز، تتشابك حوله الروايات. حيث أن بعض المؤرخين أعادوها إلى حقبة الصليبيين فيما استبعد آخرون أن تنتمي إلى حقبة أبعد من القرن التاسع عشر أي أيام السلطنة العثمانية وذلك إستنادا" إلى تقنيات البناء المستخدمة. إحدى أروع مميزات القلعة، تربُعُها فوق دعامة صخرية على ارتفاع حوالي ال50 مترا"عن الأرض فتؤدي بذلك و بكفاءة المهمة التي وُجِدَت لأجلها أي مراقبة الطريق عند مضيق الجبل. وقد تم بناؤها لتكون حدودها بمحاذاة حدود الصخرة التي شُيِّدت عليها والتي فرضت عليها شكلها الحالي فكانت مساحتها حوالي 500 متر مربع. أما جدرانها فتتراوح سماكتها بين المتر ونصف والمترين ونصف محتوية بعض الكوات للمراقبة ولإطلاق السهام. التدقيق بهندسة هذا الحصن يوصلنا إلى أنه مكون من ثلاث طبقات ويقدّر أن البناء تم على مرحلتين من قسمين متلاصقين من دون أن يمنع ذلك إنشاء هذه الوحدة الهندسية المتناسقة. للأسف وكما هي العادة في لبنان، القلعة كانت عرضة للإهمال من قبل الدولة بحيث أصبحت مهددة بفترة من الفترات بالزوال بسبب غياب المراقبة وأعمال الترميم ناهيك عن قيام كسارات بجانبها. لكن في عام 2007 و بمبادرة من جمعية الإنماء الإجتماعي والثقافي ومؤسسة SRI إنترناشيونال وبلدية حامات وتحت إشراف المديرية العامة للآثار في وزارة السياحة كانت الخطوات الإصلاحية حيث تم إغلاق الكسارات وإضافة اللوحات التوجيهية فضلا عن تأهيل درج القلعة ووضع حماية حديدية له. فبالتالي أصبحت مُدرَجة في قائمة وزارة السياحة لأهم الأماكن السياحية في لبنان. الترميمٌ أعاد للحصن بعضاً من هيبته وزاد من توافد السياح المتيمين بالآثار العسكرية إليه.

A very picturesque fort off the side of the highway. It is definitely worth a stop if you are passing by though I would not make this a final destination as it is small and can be explored quickly. Seeing the fort from a distance with the surrounding nature is the best part. It is has a very beautiful design jutting out from the rock that grabs your attention. There is no entrance fee or tour guides, it is purely self-exploration.

If you are in Lebanon, and you are interested in history, definitely visit this fort, it is actually nice to see, and walk through, although it is not that big, it is lacking many things to make it awesome, and it has some nice architecture. For a little bit of history, it seems that it is reasoned, that the castle was constructed in the 17th century, by Emir Fakhreddine II.

Very nice place to go but it requires an athletics to climb it, since it is resident on the top of big Rock.. This castle is placed in an area named as Madfona (i.e. Immersed) and this place have a nice location filled with nature and shepherds so everyone will enjoy traveling to this area.. I recommend to visit it and enjoy the beauty of nature there.

A very unusual site to visit, which is just off the highway 51 that links Beirut to Tripoli. There is a fence around the site and the gate was open but there was no one at the gate when we were there. It could mean that the castle might be closed at certain times, but it should be open during the day. Well worth stopping for a few minutes to see it.
