Lewis and Clark Discovery Center at Hells Gate State Park - Lewiston, Idaho Opened in 2004, along the Snake River in Hells Gate State Park in Lewiston Idaho, the Lewis and Clark Discovery Center, was built to honor the Corps of Discovery’s journey, its stone and timber architecture mirroring the rugged landscapes they once crossed. Inside, we are greeted by a Mandan figure, immediately setting the tone of the center. It honors the Indigenous people who played a vital role in the expedition, including sheltering Lewis and Clark at Fort Mandan. The lobby opens up, into a bright, airy space. Its walls are filled with information about the Lewis and Clark Journey, and in the center, there is a large interactive topological map where you can explore their route. The building has high ceilings and huge windows, that showcase a panoramic view of the Snake River outside. Great little museum with many historical plaques and movies on area history and L& C Corps of Discovery venture. Nice view of Snake River along with sandy beach for swimming. Easy walked paths around building with several places for picnicking. \ One drawback is fee to get into Hells Gate State Park. Center is located in park. Gift shop, clean washrooms and friendly staff.

Very cool place with a lot of historical information and some beautiful views along the Snake River . The thing is that you have to pay to get into the park and I don't think we should have to pay to enjoy a place that is supported by our taxes and public land.. it makes this beautiful place inaccessible for many people who can't afford to come here..

Honestly pretty disappointing for $15. The history discussed was very basic and the indoor section was just a hallway with a handful of artifacts and a couple of maps/plaques. The walk outside was nice but mostly because the weather was nice that day. There wasn't particularly spectacular about the landscape or exhibits.

If I was driving through again, I would save my money and revisit the Nez Pierce visitor center at Spalding's Chapel down the road - much more interesting and whispers...

We have been here a few times, for various events. Mainly, the first day of the year hike is why we come.

The land management doesn't go beyond the camp ground. The trails are managed by the Army Corp.

This facility itself and the surrounding grounds are clean.

We really wish this center's land was managed by and the emphasis of their efforts were focused on the surviving indigenous people, the Nimiipu.

The entire park now cists $12 a day or $80 a year (out of state) to access.

Not worth $14 entry fee, only worth a quick look & the 45min video if you’re already camping in the park. Only 12 displays, outdoor walking path & 45min video. We had a much better experience at the local Nez Perce County Historical Society & Museum in town (guided tour at 2pm & treasure trove of displays & artifacts) and the Nez Perce National Historic Site (awesome visitor center & informative rangers).
