Gutenberg Castle in Liechtenstein is an extraordinary historical landmark that has stood the test of time since its first mention in historical records in 1150. The castle's impressive architecture, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Rhine Valley, is a testament to the remarkable feat of engineering achieved during the Middle Ages. The castle's walls, which are over two meters thick in some places, and the tower, standing almost 30 meters high, are awe-inspiring and provide a glimpse into the impressive medieval engineering and architectural techniques.
The castle has played a crucial role in many significant events throughout history, including battles, political negotiations, and cultural exchanges. With numerous noble families calling it home, it has been the site of numerous sieges and struggles for power. The Great Hall was once the site of a momentous meeting between Emperor Charles V and the leaders of the Swiss Confederacy in 1530, making it a vital location in European political history.
Today, Gutenberg Castle is open to the public, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the castle's many rooms, exhibits, and artifacts. The museum dedicated to the castle's history and the collection of medieval weapons and armor provides a glimpse into the castle's rich history and cultural heritage. A visit to Gutenberg Castle is a must-do for anyone interested in history, architecture, and culture, offering a unique insight into the Middle Ages and Liechtenstein's role in...
Read moreA historical castle located within the Balzers region of Liechtenstein, that is supposed to allow entry to the entire castle for visitors. When we visited on 31 Jul, only the entrance and side area were accessible, and we were not able to proceed into the inner area or into the castle's interior.
Still, the castle provides a magnificent viewpoint of the surrounding area and the alps, with stunning view for photo opportunities. The architecture is also quite amazing and suits tourists who are historical and architectural buffs.
I recommend visiting the St Nicholas church at the bottom of the hill first, before hiking up the trail next to the church to reach the castle. The hike is quite easy (about 30 minutes), though wearing shoes is recommended.
You can take Bus 11 to drop nearby, though you should probably visit other places in Liechtenstein first before making this castle the end of your itinerary before heading to Sargans. Worth a visit, but would not say it's a must as you only can access certain areas plus there are no...
Read moreHad an incredible experience! We were the only family to visit at the time of our visit--so we had the castle grounds all to ourselves! While we were there, a couple workers were setting up for a wedding reception in the rose garden, which added even more to the whole atmosphere. As we were leaving, Stephan (a local volunteer) called out to us and asked if we would like to go inside--which isn't on the tourist menu... its closed to visitors. So he took us inside and shared some of the history with us. He seemed absolutely appreciative of our family taking the time to visit their tiny country. As we were leaving/walking back down the hill, the bride and groom arrived in their car and we had a chance to congratulate them! On the way down, we passed the rest of the wedding party as they trudged their way up the hill. Totally unique experience that didnt...
