The name of the dune, Vecekrugas, is said to originate from the Curonian language. The word "vece" meaning "old" and "kruogs" meaning "tavern" combine to mean "old tavern". Legend has it that this refers to a small tavern located at the base of the dune. The formation of the entire dune ridge of the Curonian Spit can be traced back to the 16th and 17th centuries when extensive deforestation took place. Strong winds from the Baltic Sea caused sand to move inland, burying villages and forests. Locals eventually began to combat the sand by erecting barriers and planting trees and grass.
