Lithuanian Ethnographic Museum (Lietuvos Etnografijos Muziejus) – an absolute gem for anyone who loves culture, history, and immersive travel! 🌾🇱🇹
This place is a solid 10/10 – no exaggeration. You can easily spend the whole day here (or even longer), wandering across a vast area filled with traditional wooden houses, windmills, barns, and workshops from different regions of Lithuania. Everything is arranged with incredible attention to detail, and the interiors feel like they’re frozen in time – some even dating back 300 years.
What makes this museum special is that you don’t just look – you interact. You can step inside the buildings, touch the tools, see how everyday objects like flour or pottery were made in the past. It’s one of the most hands-on, open-air museums I’ve ever visited – perfect for families, history buffs, photographers, or anyone who wants to feel like they’ve stepped into a Witcher-style world.
There are also taverns and food stalls on-site where you can taste authentic Lithuanian cuisine – highly recommend the cepelinai (potato dumplings filled with meat and topped with crispy bacon) and craft kvass (“GIRA” – an easy 10/10!).
The entire museum is laid out like a miniature version of Lithuania, with different ethnographic regions represented – so it feels like a cultural road trip within one location. It’s clean, well-maintained, and incredibly atmospheric. The vibe is seminarium to...
Read moreThis is a really good open air museum, you will be on a Journey through different time period of lithuania, while surounded by open nature.
You are free to roam around the park/museum at your own pace and enjoy the beautiful building from different eras of history. all the historical gardens are kept nicely maintained, and if you visit during the day you can take a tea/snacks in the local shops there.
This museum if very dog friendly with lots of space for the dogs to feel free and take a break from the city.
Price wise its very cheap for the amount of things to see, we paid 2.6 euro per person, a 2€ fixed price for parking plus 0.5€ for 1h of parking. parking is free from 21h (9pm) but close to visitors at 22h (10pm)
We visited at 19:00 (7pm) and the park was basically empty, this is why I would say it's an awesome place to take your dog, they will be able to rund free in the big fields since there's nothing else but open fields, be sure to keep the leash on or available at all time.
The museum also ofers sleeping areas that are available through booking.com, we didn't book it because of some change in planing, but from what we saw the sleeping areas (visitors can be outside all day) seem very nice, the exception is that you dont have private bathrooms nor a kitchen, wifi is also not available.
overall it was a very nice Museum, and I would...
Read moreI grew up in Lithuania and never visited this museum. And now after living in the USA for 16 years I finally got to visit the museum and I was mesmerized! It was like going back to my childhood, to my grandma's house but even better! My 7 year old daughter kept asking if we could live here. She was as mesmerized as I was. It felt like we went back in time 100 years. I was very impressed with the quality and details of collections: from buildings, old time playgrounds, weaved fences, and vegetable gardens outside to furniture, art, dishes, and tools inside. They have an incredible collection of dozens of old time carriages! I could spend days at this place. I have been unable to locate anything similar here in the USA. I am Very proud of you Lithuania for setting this up. The Museum used to have a hotel as a part of this museum experience where you can stay and spend the night. They didn't have it last year. I hope they bring it back. Can not wait to come back this year! Must see! 07.25.2022 update: we visit this museum every time we come to Lithuania. Since then we have visited open air museums in USA, Latvia and Denmark - Lithuanian Open Air museum is by far the best of those 3, just by sheer volume of acreage, houses and...
