You wouldn’t expect it in the current silence of the forests and lakes of Aukštaitija National Park, but Ginučių Piliakalnis was an important military stronghold for centuries. From the 9th to the 12th century, a wooden fortress stood here and in the 13th to the 15th century, the famous Linkmenys castle stood here. The castle mound lies in the middle of the Šiliniškės ridge and the castle also guarded the trade route between Vilnius and Daugava. On the hill is a memorial plaque for Antanas Smetona, twice president of the First Lithuanian Republic.
