The Majete Wildlife Reserve is a protected area located in the southern region of Malawi Africa. It covers an area of approximately 70000 hectares and is known for its rich biodiversity and conservation efforts.
The reserve was established in 1955 but unfortunately due to rampant poaching and illegal activities the wildlife population drastically declined. As a result in 2003 African Parks a non-profit conservation organization took over the management of the reserve in collaboration with the Malawian Government.
Since then Majete Wildlife Reserve has undergone significant transformation. African Parks implemented various conservation strategies such as anti-poaching patrols community involvement habitat restoration and reintroduction programs. As a result the reserve has witnessed a remarkable recovery with the wildlife population bouncing back and flourishing.
Today Majete Wildlife Reserve is home to a wide range of animals including elephants rhinos lions leopards hyenas zebras and various species of antelopes. The reserve is also a haven for bird enthusiasts with over 300 species of birds recorded.
In addition to wildlife conservation Majete Wildlife Reserve also focuses on benefiting the local communities. African Parks has implemented community development programs that provide employment opportunities education healthcare and support for sustainable agriculture practices. This has significantly improved the relationship between the reserve and its surrounding communities fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the preservation of the wildlife and natural resources.
Visitors to Majete Wildlife Reserve can enjoy a variety of activities such as guided game drives walking safaris bird-watching tours and boat cruises on the Shire River. There are also several accommodation options available within or near the reserve ranging from luxury lodges to camping sites.
Overall Majete Wildlife Reserve stands as a remarkable example of successful wildlife conservation efforts and a testament to the positive impact that can be achieved through collaboration between conservation organizations and local...

Read moreMejete is a great place. We were positively suprised by our experience. We had heard a lot about Liwonde NP, but less about Mejete. We saw many animals. Not the big 5, but a lot of elephants. Our guide was great.
We stayed 1 night at Thawale Lodges. This place is great and the staff is professionnal. Food was delicious and very good quality. A great chef. The lodge is great and a lot of animals come to drink water (including elephants). We stayed in a ‘’luxuary tent’’ with AC, shower and hot water. There is also a natural pool.
We booked with a company called the Travel Centre in Blantyre. The Amaryllis hotel provided their contact information. Transportation, food and and accommodation were included. It is also possible to book on the Mejete reserve website directly. It is also possible to go with your own car and just spend the day there. I highly recommend for a budget friendly safari. Cheaper than most safari in Kenya and Tanzania. Also less...
