Bukit Bongol — Attraction in Borneo

I went here on April 13, 2025 when my church did a hill climbing activity with 77 youth, children and adults. It is very beautiful to climb here to see the sunrise and sunset views but the facilities are lacking. Here are some of my suggestions to attract more tourists or hill climbers to come here..

1. Before climbing..First point/place..the toilet is dirty and there is no water or electricity supply. There are no solar lights to illuminate the entire first climbing area. Please make sure the toilet is clean and has water or electricity supply..who is the owner of this place? please do good maintenance if you want to attract this place as a tourist spot 2)replace signs at each hiking spot to attract more hikers to hike 3)When at the top, prepare a covered trash can and make sure the climbers bring your trash back down. Don't leave it lying around on the hill. Also prepare a trash can at each point so that the area is free of trash. 4)Please replace the torn and worn flag on the summit. The beautiful scenery should be kept free of garbage and good maintenance every week. The climbers who take turns every day should have a heart that always cares for the environment. Finally went there with my friend. We took the Mandap trail which is the toughest of all the three trails but the shortest.

We took in total 3 hours to complete the hike. It was more difficult than we expected because of the steepness. We had to use our hands to climb the steps at certain segments and were pretty active people. So, heads-up for those who’re looking for a chill hike, think twice before going for Mandap trail.

The GPS location for the starting point of Mandap trail on Google Maps is accurate, just GPS your way there. We referred to the MySabah Climbing Bukit Bongol blogpost, all the information there is very accurate. Thank you so much to the author!

We’re still glad we did it, it’s an achievement 😂 we didn’t bring any hiking pole nor gloves but I think they’d have been helpful.

The views weren’t as nice as the photos as it was a very gloomy day and it just rained that morning itself.

All in all, still a good experience. Nature in Sabah never...

A very challenging trail 😵‍💫... My advice, for those who suffer from knee pain please avoid from hiking this hill until your knee fully recovered...this hill has 3 trails to reach the peak. I chose via Kampung Mandap, the shortest trail. I took 1 hour 20 minutes including a few times stopped to snap a lot of pictures 🤭.. the best part was, your hard work to climb the steep paths will be rewarded with a very fascinating view. The scenary from above the hill was very refreshing and calming. When i was there, there only 4 of us, my husband and i and another couple....it seemed not many people came here that day. No crowded so it quite peaceful and privacy ☺️. Tips from me, wherever you are, what you need to do is behave...please not make too much noise, please don't make weird things and please do not litter 🚯. Please take your trash...
