The purpose of visiting Danum Valley is to experience Borneo's primary rainforest and the wildlife it offers. This location definitely provides an insight into Borneo's flora and fauna.

To experience the rainforest you require the services of a guide, our guide made the entire experience memorable for so many reasons.

Whilst you will spend a lot of time walking in the rainforest, we saw so much interesting wildlife.

The night walks and drives are also recommended as you will encounter those nocturnal animals you wouldn't see during the day. tourists we had never seen these animals.

There is accommodation at Danum Valley Field Centre and would recommend the 4D/3N as one full day in the rainforest is simply not enough.

The rooms and dining room facilities are adequate but for the price one would expect more.

The food was basic but plentiful and vegetarian options are non existent really. You cannot buy drinks at the centre but you can buy beers from reception office.

But once in a lifetime to see Orangutans in the wild together with so many birds and other animals.

The highlight of our...

Danum Valley is by far the best place to visit in Malaysia for ecotourism and to experience untouched jungle. Located deep inside the 130 million-year-old lowland dipterocarp forest, the conservation area boasts incredible biodiversity. Inside the 438 square kilometres, are hundreds, if not thousands, of species of fauna, and an even greater variety of flora, that call this area home. Lucky tourists might spot orangutans, pygmy elephants and the clouded leopard. But the biggest appeal at Danum Valley is the lack of human settlement, providing a purer environment. Logging and deforestation have devastated habitats throughout Sabah, but not inside this protected area. Activities include jungle treks with experienced guides, night safaris and visiting ancient Kadazan-Dusun burial sites.

I was very fortunate to witness Orangutan fairly up close in the wild at Danum Valley, something I’ll never forget. Top 5 experiences of my life.

From Borneo Rainforest Lodge there are many walks to take, either on boardwalks or trekking in the forest, either option is worthwhile.

Pack leech socks or either pull long socks up your legs as there are leeches.

I walked up to Coffin Cliff and View Point platform that was a hot and steep walk which takes approx 1.5 hour (moderate fitness) each way. Was also lucky to see red leaf monkey during this trek, which are very cute. And stopped by Jacuzzi pool for a cool off on the way back down.

The long canopy walk (longest in Sabah) being three made of timber and three of steel, is great especially in the morning light and bird life.

Highly recommend Danum Valley for nature and...

Stayed in the valley for three days / two nights and enjoyed seeing abundant wildlife while visiting. Saw gibbons and orangutans while in the valley along with civets and countless birds (hornbills, owls, etc.). It really is a wonderful place to see wildlife. That being said, it is incredibly hot and humid and leeches are ever present. As others have mentioned, bring long socks and a change of clothes or two. Also worth mentioning that it is possible to save some money by staying at the hostel and cooking your own meals. Danum valley is expensive and this was the cheapest option we found (aside from longer term volunteering) for visiting. Also worth noting that the sky bridge pictured in some other reviews is only accessible if you stay at the lodge, which is quite far away from the research center lodging area.
