Mount Kinabalu is essentially a massive pluton formed from granodiorite which is intrusive into sedimentary and ultrabasic rocks, and forms the central part, or core, of the Kinabalu massif. The granodiorite is intrusive into strongly folded strata, probably of Eocene to Miocene age, and associated ultrabasic and basic igneous rocks. It was pushed up from the earth's crust as molten rock millions of years ago. In geological terms, it is a very young mountain as the granodiorite cooled and hardened only about 10 million years ago. The present landform is considered to be a mid-Pliocene peneplain, arched and deeply dissected, through which the Kinabalu granodiorite body has risen in isostatic adjustment. It is still pushing up at the rate of 5 mm per annum. During the Pleistocene Epoch of about 100,000 years ago, the massive mountain was covered by huge sheets of ice and glaciers which flowed down its slopes, scouring its surface in the process and creating the 1,800-metre (5,900 ft) deep Low's Gully (named after Hugh Low) on its north side. Its granite composition and the glacial formative processes are readily apparent when viewing its craggy rocky peaks. It makes for a tuff hike but naturally the views are...
Read morehad the most amazing climbing experience with sabah parks last week!! we didn’t liaise with any agency but instead we booked the climbing slots on our own back in May as soon as the slots are opened. this saves us over half of what the agency charges though this also means we had to settle our own transport to and fro kinabalu park plus one of our meal on the first day of our climb.
guides and porters are settled right there and then upon registration in the morning of our climb! overall process was rather smooth and straightforward. currently the charges to hire porters are rm13 per kg. climbing stick is also available fr rent at rm10.
climbing paths are very well-maintained except when it rains you just have to be extra alert and careful of your steps. still in disbelief that we actually climbed the highest peak in southeast asia!! (outside the himalayan...
Read moreI love that trail and summit but I can only give 4 stars as the price is higher than other activities in Sabah and you cannot find a good deal if you are searching online. Ask your hotel/hostel to get a better deal than booking online (RM1800 including transportation)..Obviously, climbing mountain is extremely expensive and not for everyone as people saying that. The first day of hiking seems easy, the second day is quite challenging as you need to wake up at 2am then climbing up. Take medicine; drink enough water if you have...
