TIP OF BORNEO KUDAT, SABAH,MALAYSIA 🇲🇾
Off in search of the “Tip of Borneo”, the most northern point of Borneo.
Borneo is the third largest island in the world, and its northern-most tip is the meeting point of two big oceans, South China Sea and Sulu Sea. The Tip of Borneo is located in Kudat district and one of the most popular attractions in Sabah. The scenery is delightful but you may not know where you stand was used to be a watch-point for pirate invasion hundreds of years ago. That’s why the Tip of Borneo is also known as Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, which means the junction to the battle at the tip (in Rungus language).
Generally known as the “Tip of Borneo” which is just as well as the name in the traditional language of Rungus is “Tanjung Simpang Mengayau”, which means “the junction to the battle at the tip”, much more of a mouthful.
The “tip” is in the Malaysian state of Sabah. Most people associate Borneo as a land filled with rainforest, much of which is rapidly disappearing. Sabah apparently has greatest percentage of rainforest still remaining on the island.
The drive out Kota Kinabalu was easy enough and soon we were driving through the mountain range which is home to Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia. Once through the mountains we drove through typical Malaysian countryside and village scenery, which gradually gave way to huge palm oil plantations.
The Tip of Borneo, fittingly, sits upon a dramatic headland at one end of our beautiful beach. It is marked by a large globe and a flagpole at the highest point and a rocky outcrop pushing out a little further north. It is an easy, but very hot stroll, up to the top. We have time to spare so we visit the top a few times. Despite the warning sign at the bottom of the steps, it is possible to walk down on to the rocky outcrop which stretches into the sea, the very furthest...
Read moreVisited this place for the 2nd time while traveling to Kudat. It seems to be a must-go-to-place if you're ever in Kudat, Sabah. Scenery is as always expected, beautiful sunset as the sun goes down. The sea waves was a little rough, probably due to the Nov-Feb wind from South China Sea, but also a good time for surfers to strut on their surfing board! Would recommend travelers to visit this place in the month of June/July as annually there will be a Sunset Music Fest at the Tip of Borneo takes place in June at the northern most tip of Borneo (check local calendars for confirmation). Cafe's and restaurant has definitely improved a little better during my visit, however would hope that the community there would introduced more coconut flavors to their menu as Kudat is well known for their coconut tree (hence their landmark - which is shaped as a coconut). Accommodation wise, pretty decent. Well priced and comfortable. There's stretch of hotels, chalets, rentals for a night experience. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this place and will definitely come...
Read moreFascinating and picturesque view where South China Sea and Sulu Sea meet at the Tip of Borneo. Beautiful coastal views and amazing landscaping and land mark can be seen at this fascinating scenic spot. Off in search of the “Tip of Borneo”, the most northern point of Borneo. Simpang Mengayau means ‘lingering junction’ as it is here that the South China Sea lingers and meets the Sulu Seas flowing from the east. The sunsets and full moons are just beautiful. The Pulau Kalampunian lighthouse is a reminder of treacherous coastline and past shipwrecks. On the left is the beautiful beach of Pantai Kalampunian with white long sandy beach and mesmerizing azure blue water . It’s a lovely easy stroll to the flagpole, the Globe and the rocky outcrop that forms the...
