Fun river cruise to see monkeys and fire flies. The dinner buffet was ok. Nothing terrible but nothing extraordinary either.
Experience - pretty awesome and unique. I don't know where else you cruise down a to we looking for monkeys in the day and the. Fireflies at night! Also while looking for fireflies we looked for crocodiles which was pretty awesome and scary all at the same time. We did find a few, but nothing scary.
River guides - The one thing that we would have enjoyed more of is more explanation from the river guides. They just sat in the boat and then pointed when there was a monkey, monitor lizard or fire flies. It would have been great to have them explain what we are looking for, what lives in the beautiful river and surrounding jungle etc.
Boat - uncomfortable as anything you can imagine. My butt was numb by the time we were done. I'm six foot and I was dying for leg room, if your any taller be prepared to suffer! But it was doable.
Bugs - you are in the middle of the jungle be sure to spray yourself over and over with bug spray. People sprayed so much bug spray that our boat smelled like a floating canister of Off!
Cost - 60 for adults and 30 for kids. Very reasonable in our opinion. It was a unique experience that you can't get elsewhere.
Transportation/Drive - you can either go with a tourist agency or drive by yourself. We had a car and drove ourselves. Roughly 2 hrs from Kota Kinabalu. It was a beautiful drive in the day. Coming back at night was a little nerve-wracking but we made it fine.
Would I recommend it - absolutely it was very unique and...

We arrived to Kota Kinabalu because that’s what people on the internet recommended to do. However when we got here we found that we were so far from anything and were disappointed that we couldn’t see the orangoutangs. BUT with a little research we found Klias River Cruise.
They open at 4 and you can either drive yourself without prebooking anything (so you can just turn up) or you can get a tour bus to take you. We found it was cheaper to get your own car for a couple days to explore around Kota Kinabalu cheaply as the tours are quite expensive.
Entry is 60RM for adults for the “Full package” which includes 2 boat cruises, tea/coffee and cakes, plus dinner.
We got there at 4. At about 5 it’s time to go on the first cruise where they take you to the monkeys. They weren’t orangoutangs as they live on higher land but we saw Proboscic monkeys and some other types too. We also saw monitor lizards and the view was just spectacular. Then you come back for a buffet dinner which was delicious- we had to come back for seconds. Then you head off to the second cruise which is in the dark (pretty cool) where they take you to see the fireflies.
All pretty amazing to be honest and all for 60RM? Definitely worth the 2 hour trip from Kota Kinabalu. The drive is easy and beautiful, so don’t worry about driving there yourselves :)
Perfect river experience and perfect example for how beautiful Borneo really is. Thanks Klias...

Imagine a monkey with a nose so majestic it could detect bad decisions from three villages away.. that's the Proboscis monkey, and Klias Wetlands is one of the few places on Earth where you can catch them doing their best jungle uncle impersonation.
These oddly charming creatures are found only in Borneo, that's Malaysia's Sabah and Sarawak , Brunei , and parts of Kalimantan , Indonesia. With just around 7,000 to 8,000 left in the wild, they’re basically VIP residents of the mangrove swamp , snacking on leaves and looking mildly offended by human intrusion. Males sport the big honker, apparently to woo the ladies or to win a nose-off during mating season.
Your journey includes a slow boat ride through mangrove dreams, where you'll likely spot these bellied philosophers perched in trees , judging silently. And just when you think it’s over , the river gets lit literally. Fireflies blink across the canopy like a low-budget Disney moment that somehow feels perfect.
Highly recommend if you're into endangered oddballs , magical evenings , and the kind of boat ride where your guide whispers facts while secretly...
