I was one of the 8 Americans and 2 local guides who witnessed the latest eruption in September 2022. Wow, what an experience!!!! We were tourists who are birders, wildlife experts, naturalists and wildlife photographers thinking that after our trek through the jungle and long climb to the top of the lookout tower, we would see wildlife coming to lick the mud which is filled with salt and other minerals animals come to enjoy. While at the top of the tower we heard a great explosion. Then we saw the center of the volcano erupt tons and tons of mud 30 feet high. There was also quite a lot of steam and roaring noises. Our guides told us to climb down the tower steps as quickly as possible and run into the jungle as we saw the hot mud "lava" quickly move toward the tower. If the tower were to be surrounded by the mud "lava" we might be trapped, unable to get to dry land and possibly drown in the hot mud lava. On the way down the tower steps, the roaring became less and less. We saw that the the eruption stopped for the most part and the mud had not reached the tower. So we stopped our panic escape and took photos of the small center eruption which was then nothing but a large mud pot erupting and throwing large mud bombs about and steam which were not a threat. We saw that the mud at the edge of the eruption was not deep and also not boiling hot. It had cooled quickly. All in all it was a lifetime experience we were so happy to witness. The 10 of us might be the only humans to witness the rare Lipad mud volcano erupt in modern history. What luck to be there!!!! I understand the volcano is closed right now and don't know why, since the eruption stopped. There are a couple of great videos on Facebook and elsewhere showing the main eruption.
