The drive to the the lookout tower (menara kayangan) moderately difficult but definitely manageable. There are some trails leading up to the tower if you wish to walk up instead. The starting point for the hike up mount silam is also there, there are 2 trails - one easy one difficult but it's a little misleading. Both trails converge in the middle so the so called easy trail becomes part of the difficult trail from the middle. It takes about 1.5 hour to hike up either trail. The first half of the easy trail is just walking on cement pavement for 45 minutes and becomes a real hike for the next 45 mins. The difficult trail is all hiking/climbing for 1.5 hours. The trail is beginner friendly, anyone with average fitness shouldn't have issues. Scenery at the top is exactly same as the one on the starting point. The plants and moss are really beautiful and it's...

This is a wonderful place to view Darvel Bay in Lahad Datu. The montane forest is very intact. Lots of pitcher plants. The tower is slightly low on maintenance. This place gets really full of people during school holidays and long weekends...but it is very quiet on most days. The hike to the peak of Mt Silam is relatively simple via a nice concrete trail. Birding here is excellent. Quite a few endemics and sought after species. You can enquire for a bird guide at the gate. The guide is very knowledgeable of the birds in the area. The whole area is not a touristy place, so if you want privacy whilst trekking or birding, this is the place to be. And it is cheap to stay at the guesthouse!!! Get your tour operator to book the guesthouse through the District...

Tower is closed. Trail is closed too! So only 3 stars. And even that is too much. Initially I just want to give 1 star!

But the view up there is ok. Worth the drive.

There is one small water creek flowing down the mountain side and by the road side. Good enough for me to be in touch with nature.

I wish that the state government will not just close everything down and stop giving reason for people to go and experience places like this.

Observation is done after making the drive just to discover that a waterfall site in lembah Danum, that easily accessible to people is also closed. Did this the day before visiting...

If u are planning for an adventure hike then u should try to conquer mount silam, make sure to be there early and you could be able to see crabs on the way up. Other than hiking activities, this place is suitable for family outing as u can drive to the hill top (which is 10km from the foothill) to enjoy the beautiful scenery and climb the observation tower.

The trail and the tower were closed during our visit The entrance ticket was RM 5,but there was nothing to see at the top ,plus the day we went was quite windy Hope the government will repair this place soon and promote it to both local and tourist Cons: -: Poor maintenance -: Tower was closed -: Restaurant was closed -: Many land erosion and loose rocks
