I've been wanting to visit Sky Mirror for a while, ever since I saw various magical pictures where the water was so calm that a clear reflection could be captured. I definitely wanted to experience this myself.
To the actual spot, we need to take a boat ride. The trip took around 30 minutes each way, during which we could enjoy the view of the riverside and the sea breeze.
It was indeed a unique sight as we were nearing the place, which, out of nowhere, a huge group of people was standing and strolling about in the middle of the sea. It was due to a particularly shallow part of the seabed that had somehow become a tourist attraction.
Despite my efforts, I couldn't replicate the mirror-like effect in my own pictures. The sea water, even when it is shallow and calm, will always have a little ripple due to wind, waves and people walking about, and even the tiniest of disturbance will distort the picture greatly. That's when I found out how they actually did it.
The pictures were actually taken with a clever setup. The cameraman will need to meticulously setup his photo taking station, first using a plank to smooth out and flatten a small section on the sand, then using barriers to trap a pool of shallow and calm water, some umbrellas to block out the strong direct sunlight, and placing the phone camera very low to the ground to capture the reflection that we see in the pictures, which is created by that trapped pool of stagnant water. So, while the reflection is in fact from the sea water, it is man-made rather than natural.
The results do speak for themselves though, as they are truly wonderous to behold. The area also provided a clean and empty backdrop for the pictures, as we are literally in the middle of the sea. The cameraman also carried some props to create some amusing false perspective pictures.
Do note that you will be exposed under the cruel cruel Malaysian sun for at least more than an hour, with the sandbar reflecting more sunlight onto you. It is highly recommended to have sun protection of some sort.
Overall, I think it was a great and unique experience that's worth the time and price. However, it did lose its magic once I visited it. Nevertheless, I'd recommend anyone to experience it at least once if they...
Read moreYou wouldn't expect this tiny place is located in Malaysia, like literally in the middle of nowhere.
I enjoyed the boat journey (passing by the mangrove forest and seeing swimming monkeys) from the jetty to the small island however, in a way, this place is a bit overrated. The photos are results of optical illusion, experienced guide and photographer who know how to do their thing. Thanks to them, we had beautiful photos.
I was happy with the service of the company I took because it left later than the big crowd, the skipper also explained a little bit of history and some flora & fauna. Half way through out time on the island, the crowd started to leave and the sun came out so we managed to take awesome pics.
A few comments to improve is - please provide better toilets at the jetty (the situation is horrendous). They provided nasi lemak and mineral water before the journey which was good. The Jeram jetty area is quite dirty so maybe a clean-up? I'm local Msian am so used to it but think of the overseas tourists. The price was a tad expensive (RM80) but I hope it could be put to good use like better sanitation, improvise the cleanliness etc.
If you want to visit; don't forget plenty of water, sunscreen, sunnies, and maybe a hat. Never go on a weekend or holiday. I've been told the day that I went, the crowd was down by 50% because if it...
Read moreSky Mirror in Kuala Selangor is a unique natural phenomenon and a fun outing if youâre looking for something different. Whether it feels truly âworth itâ depends on what you enjoy, itâs less of a sightseeing attraction and more of a photo experience under the sun.
The journey starts at the jetty, where youâll board a speedboat for about 30 minutes. This ride itself is a highlight, the wide-open sea, refreshing strong winds, and coastal views set the tone for the trip. Once you reach the sandbank, the shallow water creates a reflective surface that mirrors the sky beautifully, especially when the weather is clear.
The team in charge provides props and helps to take photos for everyone, often suggesting angles to maximize the mirror effect. Still, itâs best to come prepared with your own ideas for poses to make the pictures more personal and creative. Do note that it can get very hot, as there is no shade, so sun protection is a must.
Overall, Sky Mirror is an experience to share with friends or family if you enjoy photography and donât mind a bit of heat. The reflections, boat ride, and playful atmosphere make it memorable, but the value really depends on how much you enjoy the novelty of capturing unique photos.
Kindly refer to the tour guide for the schedule Bring along water, umbrella, sunglasses!! Wear bright colour outfit for...
