This is much more of a locals beach and often far less crowded than Għajn Tuffieħa / Riviera bay which is always overcrowded to the point of being unpleasant, even off-season. Gnejna is much more relaxed, has a watersports hire place and has two handy kiosks where you can buy drinks, snacks and ice cream. The water here can have a little more seaweed and debris than other beaches. The food from Grill & Chill - Gnejna Bay is pretty good if you're after a more substantial sandwich or lunch. One thing that confuses me is that there's a chap walking round with a hat on that acts like he's an official parking attendant. He's friendly enough and it appears you're meant to tip him. I'm not entirely sure why he's here since parking is technically free at this location. However Malta is not a country built on steadfast rules and there's nothing stopping anyone going crazy with an outfit, a colour printer, a laminator from LIDL and some lanyards! It feels a bit like a grey area though. Either he's official or he's not! If there was an official fee for parking and Gnejna beach, it could go towards refurbishment and upkeep of the toilets here which are positively medieval. I'd recommend bringing your own tissues and sanitiser! They are in desperate need of being replaced / upgraded. Other than that, there's plenty to explore and its a great place to have a coffee...
Read moreBeach that is not well known about thought we would give it a try. Prob need a car to get here although it is served by the number 101 bus. Best to arrive here early as there are only limited car parking spaces here although I would prob give it a miss at weekends due to the sheer number of people who visit. If you risk a weekend visit be prepared to have your car blocked in and be stuck there for hours due to the unique Maltese style of parking anywhere without a care in the world. There are a couple of kiosks here selling hot and cold food and drinks and also present on the beach is a place that hires sun lounges, parasols etc. The beach isn't that big but is of sandy material. Water is clear and pedalos etc can be hired for the hour. 1 big negative mark for me was the toilet block there. Both men's and women's contains 1 toilet and despite a cleaner seemingly sat outside all day didn't have any toilet roll in either, along with missing toilet seats and a general nasty smell and...
Read moreReview for Gnejna Bay, Malta (2025):
The bay is naturally beautiful and the water looks inviting at first glance. However, as of July 2025, a lot of seaweed has been washed ashore, which makes swimming less enjoyable. There isn't too much trash overall, but you can still find bits of litter scattered among the seaweed, which gives the beach an unkempt feel.
Considering the number of visitors, the local authorities should really invest in proper beach cleaning equipment. In its current state, the beach does not meet the standards one would expect in Europe.
You can rent two sunbeds and an umbrella for €18 – which is fair. But the toilets are unacceptable: extremely dirty, no soap, and no toilet paper. The nearby kiosks sell enough and profit from tourism; they could at least take turns keeping the toilets clean and stocked with basic supplies.
It's a pity, because the place has potential. But in this condition, I won’t be...
