Caverne Patate is a rugged, offbeat adventure for those eager to explore Rodrigues’ volcanic landscapes! This cave system offers a fascinating peek into the island’s geology, with sprawling chambers, dramatic stalactites, and narrow passages. The guided tour was a highlight—our guide brought humor and imagination to the experience, weaving fun stories about the cave’s formation while sharing tidbits about Rodrigues’ history.
A few practical notes: The road leading to the cave is currently under construction. If you’re driving a regular car, you’ll need to park near the road and walk the remaining stretch (about 10-15 minutes in the sun). 4x4 vehicles can navigate closer, but expect bumpy terrain. The path to the cave entrance is rocky and uneven, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water/sunscreen.
Upon arrival, there’s a small entrance fee (cash recommended), and flashlights are provided—though the guide’s commentary and jokes kept the atmosphere light. Inside, the cave is surprisingly spacious, but some sections are extremely slippery due to damp rocks; tread carefully! The guide’s playful “imaginary” narratives added charm, especially for kids or the young-at-heart.
While not a polished attraction, Caverne Patate’s raw, adventurous vibe is part of its appeal. Just come prepared for physical challenges: slippery floors, and the trek back under the Rodriguan sun. A unique, educational outing for nature lovers and...
Read moreAn Extremely Disappointing Caverne Experience Our recent visit to the caverne was, regrettably, an experience marked by extreme disappointment. From the moment we began, we felt continually rushed by our guide, who seemed more intent on hurrying us through the site than allowing us to truly appreciate it. We were barely given a moment to pause and capture any meaningful photographs, leaving us with no opportunity to create lasting memories of the experience. Throughout the walk, our guide repeatedly urged us to "hurry," making it impossible to explore at a comfortable pace. Her demeanor was far from kind, and to our dismay, she even asked us to be quiet while we were conversing. The culmination of this rushed and unwelcoming approach was particularly disheartening when we were hurried even while making a wish – a moment that should have been peaceful and personal. This was, without a doubt, a truly bad experience. We simply cannot recommend this tour. The only silver lining was the presence of our own transport guide, whose efforts to uplift our mood were greatly appreciated amidst the frustration caused by the...
