Edzna is a historic archaeological site located in the Campeche region of Mexico. It was once a major Mayan city that flourished during the Preclassic and Classic periods of Mayan civilization, from about 400 BCE to 1000 CE. The site is known for its impressive architectural structures, including pyramids, palaces, plazas, and other ceremonial buildings.

One of the most prominent features of Edzna is its Great Acropolis, a massive pyramid structure that rises over 100 feet (30 meters) in height. The pyramid is made up of multiple levels, with a grand staircase leading to the top, where a temple once stood. The views from the top of the Great Acropolis offer a panoramic vista of the surrounding landscape.

Another notable structure at Edzna is the Temple of the Masks, a unique building adorned with intricate stone masks of the Mayan rain god, Chaac. These masks, along with other ornate carvings and sculptures found throughout the site, provide insights into Mayan mythology, religion, and culture.

The site also contains several ball courts, where the ancient Mayans played the Mesoamerican ballgame, a ritualistic sport with deep cultural significance. The ballgame was not just a physical competition but also had religious, political, and social implications in Mayan society.

Edzna is surrounded by lush vegetation, including tropical rainforest, which adds to its natural beauty and makes it a picturesque destination for tourists interested in history and archaeology. The site is well-preserved, and ongoing excavations and research continue to reveal new insights into the Mayan civilization and its architectural achievements.

Visiting Edzna offers a unique opportunity to explore the ancient Mayan civilization, appreciate its monumental architecture, and gain a deeper understanding of Mayan history and culture. The site is also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing its cultural significance and...

Bijām piektdienā, cena 90 pesso. The most prominent building at this site is the main temple located in the square. Built on a 40 m high platform, it provides a wide overview of the surroundings. Another important building located on the square is the ball field. The ball area consists of two parallel structures. The upper rooms of the ball court were probably used to store images of the gods associated with the events, as well as items needed for the games.

Edzna was inhabited as early as 400 BC and was abandoned c. 1500 AD. During the occupation, a government was established whose power was legitimized by the relationship between the governors and the deities. During the Late Classic period, Edzna was part of the Calakmula state. Edzna may have been inhabited as early as 600 BC, but it took until 200 AD before it became a major city. The name Edzná comes from "Itzaes nama". The architectural style of this place shows signs of the Puuc style, although it is far away from the Puuc Hills sites. The decline and eventual abandonment of Edzna remains a mystery today.

Edzná was opened in 1907. The first organized excavations began in 1958. In 1986, coordinating agencies began employing Guatemalan refugees in excavation, restoration, and maintenance at Edzna. This project was funded by various international organizations. ...

Went today..Easy collectivo from Campeche at 7.00 but packed no proper seat! Got dropped of at door of ruins. Confirmed times with driver but for coming bavk was running up and down twice ftom main road and stood in mosquito swarmed heat for a full hour. Finally a collectivo came ..they said because Sunday ahaha..always something. The actual Edzna ruins magnificent. Welcomed by very kind staff. They re happy to have you. Nice spotless toilets. Jungle or road short walk and amazing ruins. You can easily climb up as they ve had the sense to put in small steps..that s a first..I m only 4ft 10 and asthmatic so a godsend!! Just be early as suddenly tours appeared breaking the calm! There s no cafe but a working drinks machine and crisps etc. I really enjoyed my 3 hours. I believe it s open 9 until 2. For 85 mxn and return bus fares of 90 mxn what an amazing sight .. an eerie atmosphere complete with iguanas and butterflies. Take strong mosquito repellants a sun hat and extra water. Journey is by good modern roads and took less than an hour. The best day from Campeche. Just gets...

If you want to climb every temple and read every plaque, you need at least 3 hours. The site is very impressive and well worth the one hour drive from Campeche. There are two roads from the main entrance, I recommend taking the right one and then following the path I drew. You'll climb on top of a long building from which you can see the main temple in all its grandeur. Could easily spend 20 minutes just sitting there. From Campeche you go to the bus stop next to the market, you buy the tickets inside a small shop. As soon as you arrive someone will show you the way or just ask someone. I think the price was 80$. They will drop you off at the entrance of the site. To go back, you'll need to walk from the site to the main road as not all drivers go to the entrance. At 5 the site closes and some of the employees get picked up by the collectivo at the entrance. This is the last colectivo of the day, so ask at the ticket office if the colectivo will arrive at 5 to pick up the employees just to be sure.

Absolutely amazing. The acropolis that the 5 stories sits on is something which transports you back in time! Sitting on the historic stands across the way and letting your imagination run wild as you gaze across the plaza at the large 5 stories building is an experience unlike any other. Be sure to get a tour guide so you can get the full explanation, we waited a little bit until we had an English speaking guide available for us and it was totally worth it. We also walked to the “pyramid of the sorceress” which is only partially excavated from the jungle and separate from the main acropolis. You can actually see that pyramid from the road as you are driving into edzna archeological zone, our driver pointed out what looks like a mountain in the jungle from the roadside, so it’s a great contrast and helps you to understand how much work goes into excavation and preservation of these sites. Bring water, comfortable shoes, and bug spray (like, a lot of bug spray!!)
